Well it is true that the x50 is the problem child of WM5 (mainly due to the different type of ROM used) but I am happy to report that since installing the filesys.exe patch (which is not applicable to the x51) and a couple of other hacks found on the site I have been very happy with my x50v running WM5.

Of course that is not to say that I do not still wish that Dell would actually bring out a proper upgrade for the x50 series.

Actually, I did roll back to WM2003 SE some months back, but it only lasted for a week - I could not wait to get back to WM5.

I find the memory scheme in WM5 much easier when installing stuff (the new installation process helps here as well) and really love the soft keys.

Actually, I'm quite surprised at how many problems people seem to be having with the x51v and WM5. Mine works almost flawlessly - I upgraded to ROM A06, did the fake server trick to keep it from syncing all the time and put virtually everything on an SD card to keep my storage memory free which seems to keep my x51v running fast.

Virtually everything I've learned about my x51v I have learned on this forum.

All new x51v owners should check out the tutorials and WM5 tips and tricks here on aximsite. These are great tools and have invaluable information.

Thanks aximsite!!

no problems, BT internet via Verizon cell, BT keyboard, BT mouse, 2-BT gps programs, and soft reset is a thing of the past after doing active sync fake server cure over 3 months ago. X51V is great. As to BT headset, well that isn't a big deal. Maybe someday in the future, but missing the ability to use BT headset compared to all that the Axim does is not any big deal or worth the keystrokes to complain about it.

I had two X51vs and both exhibited all of the greatly described problems:
refusing to turn on
battery drain
disappearing storage cards

This was right out of the box with no 3rd party software installed.
It was also before the fake server trick was discovered.
Both went back to Dell.

A coworker has a 2-week old X51 (not v) and it is also experiencing the above problems.
His too has zero 3rd party apps installed and he has not yet tried the fake server trick.

I would bet that 90% or more of the units returned to Dell (and complaints) were just fine, IF the fake server fix had been applied. I am sure I would have returned mine, and probably the replacement, and the replacement to the replacement, had I not found the cure here at Aximsite. Very sad! :rolling:

I've had my Axim X51v for more than 3 weeks now and it's running great. I have Pocket Breeze and Resco Today plug-in running. I installed all my programs in the built-in memory. I do occassionally soft-rest to free up some memory.

Will installing programs on the SD card speed things up?

I think there definately needs to be a distinction drawn between the x51 and the x50 series of Axims with WM5.

Although I do not have one, from what I read on the forums the x51 with the latest ROM should not really have any issues that the fake server trick does not fix (and then only if the constant attempts to sync worry you) or are not software compatibility related.

The x50 series does, however, have some pretty series issues when running WM5 - most of them related to the different type of ROM used and the filesys.exe compaction thread that is necessary. For me, and I know others have different experiences, the application of v10 of SHSMITH's excellent patch has pretty much cured this for me. My remaining problems mainly relate to the fact that the x50 WM5 rom lacks any of the more general updates/fixes found in the later roms as supplied for the x51.

I still live in hope that Dell will release a new x50 rom - but I do really expect it...
