Software Deletion Nightmare..........HELP HELP

Hello everyone. I have this really big Windows Mobile 5 nightmare. I have been using my Dopod 838 for a month now. everything was working fine until I was playing with my Dopod 838 one night, and it hanged on me. I'm not sure if this was due to some software incompatibility or some other issue, but normally when it hangs i just soft reset it and everything returns to normal.

however, to my horror, when i soft reset it this time, the next thing which i found out was that all my files on my SD card were deleted!!!!! all of my valuable files/pictures were missing! and the weirdest part is that the file directory structure is still there (the folders are there) but when i enter them the files are missing. sounds like some FAT screw up problem. but as funny as it sounds, i'm really very very worried about the prospect of not being able to recover my files anymore.

it's not just the files on my sd card that are missing, almost all my programs and files on the pda's memory are gone too! is there anyway i can retrieve my missing files? has anyone experienced something similar before???

i would really appreciate anybody's advice or help on this. thank you!!!

I would remove the SD card and do a soft reset again. After the unit is running just reinsert the card and test.

hi there. i have ejected the sd card, soft reset and reinserted the sd card but no difference.

my sd card brand is a mini sd card, i do not use norton for or on it. the problem is that it is not just the sd card which is affected, but the files on my pda phone which are gone. however, my contacts, calendar, tasks are safe. the rest are all gone.

even the shortcut files linked to the buttons of my pda are faulty because they cannot find the file they are linking to. so it's a big big nightmare for me. everything is gone!

worst part is that i used spb backup to backup my files on the card, but now that almost all the files on my card are gone, including the spb backup file, i can't think of where or how to restore my files!

I do not know anything about the Dopod. Did you backup the data and can you hard reset to unit without deleteing the data?

so even when i connect my pda phone through the usb cable, i can view the directory structure of my pda and the mini-sd card in windows explorer, but the problem is that when i enter the folders the files are not there, which is weird. can a soft reset trigger the deletion of all my files in such a short period of time? i feel that something critical must have happened when i soft resetted the pda while it was either reading/writing to the FAT or to some system file, and when i resetted, that file which controls access/viewing all my files got corrupted?

i would understand if this is confined to my pda phone memory, but my mini-sd card files are also gone. hm...i am trying to stay calm here but i know that i would prefer having my files back. thanks guys. any other ideas?

hello frenchy. i backed up the data on my min-sd card. but the problem is that that backup file is missing too!

i am a new pocket pc user from palm community previously, and i was unaware of any software that would backup my files on my pc itself. but guess it's too late now.

Usually a soft reset do not delete file that are save to a card. Your device could do thing differently. I woudl check at their web site for that information. You can also try a card reader if you have one and see from your PC if the file are there. Otherwise I think they are gone sorry

ar, contacts and tasks would be gone too? does pocket pc retain those? by the way, i am using Windows Mobile 5. or does a hard rest wipe out those too? a hard reset would be my last last resort, as i still hope that i could recover my data somehow...

when i go to Settings --> Memory, suddenly i have more space too, and my SD card's memory space is near full capacity, nearly 500mb free space, which means that they register my file deletions. so how could all my files been deleted in one soft reset? finding it hard to accept.

yeap i agree with u, i have been soft resetting many times before this and no problem occured. but on this occassion, my pictures and everything else just disappeared. found it hard to sleep last night. unfortunately i don't have a card reader for the mini-sd. but i can already read the contents of the card through windows explorer when my pda connects to the pc.

no chance of recovery really? no program that can recover 'em?

A hard reset would wipe everything and bring the device to manufacture settings. I haven't sone a hard reset using WM5 yet. In the PPC world a soft reset will delete open file that aren't save yet but will leave the saved thing intact. The contacts and appointments are on your PC if you sync so I would really care loosing those.

so if i do a hard reset, would the contacts/calendar/tasks on my pc be restored to my pocket pc when i do the sync after that? or would the blank contacts/calendar/tasks from my newly hard resetted pda overwrite those on my pc?

I'd get a card reader and try to access the card through your computer and run a program to undelete the files. Perhaps you can recover your backup of your handheld, in which case, you should be all set.

For the future, always make multiple copies of your backup file. I have one stored on my CF card, one on my laptop's harddrive, and I also occasionally make full backups of all my PDA Program CAB files, etc. to a CD.

thanks solara. I am quite new to PPC and am unaware of the best software to use for backup purposes. I used SPB to backup things onto my card, but as my recent nightmare shows, even this didn't work as the copy on the card went missing as well. What program can I use to backup my PDA files and SD card files onto my PC each time I sync and restore 'em when I hard reset my PDA?

Also, any suggestions for a software to undelete files? THank you!
