Buying Software

I've just purchased an x51v and am awaiting delivery. I know there are MANY places to purchase downloadable software, on the internet. Does anyone know where I can purchase the software, in a retail store??

Please don't jump on me and ask me why would I want to purchase from a store when I can get it online. Someone in another forum already did that! LOL I just like the idea of having a "hard copy" of whatever I purchase. That way, in case my system crashes, I'll have it. Yes, I back up my system regularly, but maybe it's just a security issue for me! LOL I have a separate disc of every program I own.

Anyway, I live in So. Cal. so if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. I know the WM 5.0 is relatively new, so there isn't all that much out there, but is software that's made for the x51, x50, or x50v compatible with the x51v?

Your responses are greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

You can get some pretty basic software for your Axim at places like CompUSA - things like Streets & Trips for example. But ... the web really is the best place to get software for an Axim X51V, for a number of reasons: you can nearly always download a trial version and give an app a test run before buying, the range of programs available is enormous and will cover just about any work or pleasure sort of interest area you could possibly think of, and many of the real blue-chip software vendors for PPC software seem to sell only online, not through retail outlets.

If you haven't already done so, browse through handango.com or pocketgear.com, just to get a feel for the sheer breadth of great apps that are around. As for the security factor of having the media, I don't think that means a lot with PPC apps (or a lot of others for that matter). When you download the install program for an app, you can back that install file up to a separate drive or wherever you like. As long as you keep hold of (and backup) your order confirmations / license info, you should not only be able to get hold of a new copy of an install file when you need one, but also get the latest .x version upgrades when they become available. Quite often, a version that you bought on a CD might not be the best / current version within a small number of months anyway.

And there is lots of great software out there for Windows Mobile 5 now, and leading vendors are updating their apps to run on WM5, or run better on WM5, every day.

I know that wasn;t the answer you're looking for, but hope it is of some help ...

There isn't much of anything at the retail stores any more.

If you want a hard copy, download the software (its zipped) and burn it to a CD or save it to a floppy. Then label it with the name and pin number.

handango and pocketgear both also offer download protection for $3 each program. In the event your system or hard drive crashes and you did not make a backup copy, the download protection lets you re-download the software at any time.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. I guess I need to get with the times! LOL I have a few thumb drives (flash drives). I do have a CD/DVD burner, so that seems like the best idea. I will also remember the suggestion about keeping the licensing info, etc., in case something happens.

I am SO excited. UPS shows it shipped yesterday! I can't wait. Have a great day everyone, and thanks again! :approve:
