Trimming protected .exe's and .dll's from WM5 ROM ??
Hey everyone,
There has been a lot of talk lately about way and methods for trimming files and dll's that reside on the ROM of the newer WM5 devices like the x51v, but I haven't really had any success with them. I am wondering if anyone knows how to trim out, or move files to places like storage cards for .exe's and .dll's? As everyone with a new Axe knows, you really only get like 27 megs of RAM left over and games like Tony Hawk need at least 28 megs. I am trying to find ways of trimming the RAM usage to leave at least 29 or 30 megs. I tried to move the Compact Framework 2 files over to the SD card, but that didn't give me much. I also replaced the home.exe and odclient.exe files with o byte files, and that didn't give me the extra couple of megs out of the RAM. The UPX compression method only compresses files when not in use, and they do not seem to work on the ROM-based, protected files, so I am wondering if anyone knows of other methods that I haven't tried, but can help me get back those 2 - 3 megs of RAM I need for my other hungry apps? Anyone tried any other methods they can report success on?

Replace odclient.exe in /Program Files/Funk Software/,
Turn off all plugins and remove all your user-installed startup programs from /Windows/Startup, Reset device, The RAM you will have after this is all you're gonna get. Sorry.

hey there Engrpaul,
I was worried you would say something like that. I am going through other ptoected exe's to see if there is anything else I do not want. I have had the ax for long enough to know that some of the programs it comes with, are not for me. Like the powerpoint program, I haven't used that once because I use the westteck suite. I was hoping there were some other, not-so-intrusive ways of trimming the ROM down. I guess I will have to go for the ROM upgrade if I want to get serious about it. Thanks man.

The only reason you save RAM using the odclient trick is that it isn't loaded into RAM on startup. The original file is still there taking up space in ROM. Good luck, maybe a future WM5 revision will leave us more RAM?
