I just found some benchmarks, it is ridiculous that the x51v is slower than the x30 so most likely i will be selling my x51v and getting an x30, or hx4700. thoughts? has anyone done this? i think the OS's are backwards compatible. and i know a LOT of software works for 2003SE so i figure ill just buy an x30....
I've had an X3i (similar to the X30), an X50v, and how an X51v. I don't know about numbers, but I love my X51v, the amazing VGA screen, and WM5. Seems fast and versatile to me.
I chuckle to myself sometimes when I think about the performance people give up to get a "nice screen" from an X50v/51v while I sit here with my faster thna fast X30 High. :)
ADDITION: Sorry, but you can't sell the software so asking for up to $500 for your USED x51v + software is bogus. We all know you're going to keep the registration keys for all that software and use it on the X30 while charging someone for the software you'd send along with the x51v. Reselling used software/software registration codes is a no-no.

The Dell Axim X50v running 2003se is a very fast, stable, and a VGA device. You may want to look into that. I'm pretty sure you could set up a trade with someone here on Aximsite for an X50v

i guess 300 would be a fair price since ive only had it about 1 1/2 months or so. dont 2003SE based devices use RAM to store info? i understand that if the backup batt dies you get a hard reset, but im willing to make the tradeoff for speed.
those are the benchmarks scroll all the way down. you will notice the x51v's spb index is 335 while the x50v is 1380. the x30 is even HIGHER. completely ridiculous.
I'll trade you my X30, in perfect condition. Comes with everything that it came with...

most likely i wont be trading, if i do a trade it will only be for an x50v. please contact me through PM. ofcourse, a trade of x50v -> x30 is not very fair on my end.
Well the review explaiins the lower scores... folks should go and read the full review where it discusses the results but here is an excerpt...
... Windows Mobile 5.0 devices score much lower on file system and application launch tests since they use ROM rather than the faster RAM for storage. This greatly reduced File System Index in turn brings down the overall Benchmark Index, since the file system tests account for 25% of that total score. Certainly, it's worth the tradeoff, since your data is safe from battery drain related hard resets, and the device doesn't feel seriously slower than WM2003SE devices on file access and launch. But if you're one of those folks who craves the device that tests best on benchmarks, in general, WM5 devices won't give you that high...
Interesting. There is a very positive review at the bottom of the review you sited
Pro: Overall, a very good device. Attractive and ergonomic design, good price, VGA display, fast processor, both CF and SD slots with SDIO support for the SD slot, Bluetooth 1.2, WiFi 802.11b and VPN support.
Con: WM5's persistent storage architecture means that the device is a bit slower launching programs than older Pocket PCs.
The reviewer points to WM5 not Dell or it's architecture as the culprit. Mare sure, that if you buy something else, that it isnt running WM5 or you might get the same results.
VE7EPQ, i know the problem. hence my title. i wanted to get a device that stores its programs on RAM not a rom. even though RAM is at risk of a complete wipe upon battery depletion, the performance tradeoff seems fair.
also, the x50v has the same exact feature list, PXA270 624 mhz, vga, graphics accelerator, wifi, BT, irDa, etc.
