I've read loads of post saying that people are going back to WM2003 after about 2 weeks because it just gets too slow, so i'm hesitant to go install wm5.
What do you guys think?

I've read loads of post saying that people are going back to WM2003 after about 2 weeks because it just gets too slow, so i'm hesitant to go install wm5.
I've upgraded a few times because I want persistant storage. After all of the tweaks it's usable for what I need it for. HOWEVER, I am heavily reliant on Excel Mobile for work, and every time I have upgraded I have ended up with WM5 losing my spreadsheets. This last time it said it could not recognize the storage card it was stored on. I had installed the spreadsheet in main memory to avoid this problem! I lost all of my changes- a few hours of work. So I went back to 2003SE.
If you don't use Excel or BT, I think it's a workable upgrade. Not perfect, but workable.
I had upgraded to WM5 about 4 to 5 times within the past 6 months.
When upgrading I can always getting WM5 to run without very little errors. It seem like every month there is more and more fixes and patches that are posted on Aximsite for me to give it another try. Each time it does get better and better and that is what is misleading.
For at first it seems to run great. But after a couple of weeks weird stuff start to happen. I just went back to wm2003se a couple of days ago myself. This time I had WM5 running for over 4 weeks and running great.
Then I installed a program that turn out to be not compatible with WM5. After it locked up trying to run it. I got the white screen of death after the restart. I did this a couple of times and didn't get the white screen of death but it locked up before it finish loading.
I decide to do hard reset. I didn't have that last installed backup and figure that it should put the unit back to where it was before. Well I did the hard reset.
I notice as my PDA had started up that the alignment screen where the plus sign in was going very very slow as it was going to each corning of the PDA. I then went to restore and it didn't worked. Not only did it not put it back the way it should have been by backing it up but it also clear many of the programs that came with WM5 on it as well.
I am thinking that this really sucks.
I was using the backup program that came with WM5.
So I got mad and said to hell with this and rolled back to 2003se.
I now notice on how much faster my unit runs again. Almost like it has hyper drive.
So back to your question. You can upgrade to WM5 and yes doing all the patches and fixes you can get it to work. So that the question. It just how long will it work before something does go wrong and then what can be done to correct it beside having to roll it back.
Something else you should ask yourself is this. If all of these patches and registry hacks does work. Then why hasn?t Microsoft or Dell release some sort of upgrade fix for it as of yet? At least one that has all of these fixes build into it where you can turn the unit on and it would work correctly by itself.
If you do upgrade you have plenty of searching / reading to do on aximsite to make it work

For me it was just 4-5h research in total through aximsite's tips and tricks forums... now is working even better than with WM2003SE... I don't know, it depends on how you feel about making the effort of upgrading!
I would advise to stick with the old one, especially if it's not causing you any problem.

I've tried the upgrade several times. I went through all of the tips -n- tricks. Each time hoping that it'd work better. And, each time I got closer to keeping WM5, but eventually I never really liked the performance.
I would have liked to have had the persistent storage and some of the other neat features. Right now, I'm just glad to have the stability of WM2003.
I'm going for it :D just ordered the discs from Dell. I've got problems connecting to the network at work (well it see the network, but won't connect) I'm hoping that it's just a firmware issue that the upgrade will deal with. My colleagues with 51's don't have a problem, it's just us that had 50's before them :(
from someone with an x30 with 2003se and an x51 with wm5 --> don't do it.
no point. more things can / will go wrong. more issues. super-fantastic support for wm5 as well. please don't.

Can you let me know how you get on and what you think please?

If you own an X50 that came with 2003SE, leave it alone because DELL will never post a fix for all the bugs. If you own an X51v that came with 2005, you'll probably get regular upgrades from DELL (until, of course, a newer version of windows mobile comes out, then they'll forget about you.)
I tried the upgrade, as did my sister. Both of us returned to 2003SE and have no regrets. Save yourself the pain and suffering.
