Cool Microsoft to launch Windows CE 6.0 by end of 2006

Guess it is time for another Forum. I found this at NEOWIN.com this morning. What are the odds it will be available for X50v / X51 ? Or work any better that WM5 ?

"Microsoft will officially launch its Windows CE 6.0 OS for embedded and mobile devices in the first half of its fiscal year 2007 (July 2006-June 2007), a move which is likely to bring Windows CE 6.0-powered handheld devices to the market early next year, according to Eddie Wu, Microsoft's senior director of device solutions sales, Asia and worldwide ODM ecosystems. Windows Mobile is built on topnof CE. So there would not necessarily be a Windows Mobile update.

It's already been brought up before - Crossbow isn't showing up till 2007, from what was discussed at the WINHEC conference earlier this year, and that's the one which may be based on WinCE6, IIRC, if it's not a Windows Mobile 2005 SE.

Actually, Crossbow will be released Q4 this year, but probably won't ship on units until 2007. And Crossbow will just be an incremental OS update like WM2003 SE.

The next major WM OS will be Photon, which should be the first WM OS based on Windows CE 6.0. It is not expected to be shipped on units until the beginning of 2008. The following is from a presentation at Microsoft Tech Days '06 held March 23 to 26, 2006, in Switzerland; it was originally quoted on these forums 2 months ago by LocutusBorgMan:

Quote:
Photon Wave: Photon is a very strategic release for Microsoft. The vision of a unified platform, modular architecture, and a customizable user interface are all focused on enabling our OEMs to deliver a wider range of differentiated products to meet the unique needs of target market segments. As we considered the scope of the Photon release, the Crossbow schedule and goal of the long term roadmap, it was clear that adjusting the Photon schedule was also necessary. We, therefore, plan to make Photon available to OEMs in Q4 2007, to start the commercialization process. This adjustment should help enable OEMs to ship Crossbow devices throughout 2007 and provide necessary time to commercialize Photon devices for a 2008 release. This adjustment should also help enable us to base Photon on the next major release of Windows CE (“Yamazaki”). “Yamazaki” will provide an improved kernel, a new security model, and a number of other enhanced features.

I hope they get WM5 right for those X50V users first...But that will have to be a collective effort between Microsoft and Dell.
