Wireless internet slow on x51v

Hi all,

wondered if you might be able to shed some light...

I'm using an x51v, and connecting to internet via my wireless router (USR 8046). I have set my axim to a fixed IP address, as it's the only way it will connect to the router. The router is not password protected.

I can connect fine, and signal strength is excellent throughout my home. But, all internet actions are sooooooo slow. Browsing via Opera or IE is painfully slow, and attempting to check my hotmail via pocket MSN is so slow that it times out in most cases.

I have a desktop (wired direct to router) and a laptop (wireless), and browsing is much quicker on both. My ISP is NTL (UK), and download/upload speed is 1Mbps/256kbps.

Also of note: When I set my IP to static (192.168.123.108), the axim initially fails to connect. I need to run Hitchiker once before it will connect. I don't change any settings in Hitchiker; I just connect with it. After that, I can connect with no problems (without Hitchiker). The connection process is quick.

I hope someone can suggest why it it so slow, as it would be nice to have a functional internet on my PDA.

Thanks in advance,

Leeko

If you dont already have it A12 ROM version will make your internet browsing experience much better. Also have you tried Opera, this is available in a trial version and if you have not already tried it then I would recommend giving it a try. Also if your device does not have much memory free then I would suggest trying to free some and then delete your history and saved content through the menu/options in PIE.

have you tried to turn wlan power save mode from "auto" to ''disable''?
this worked well for A02 &A04
with A12 ''Auto" seems to work fine.

The slow browsing, slow email etc is just the nature of doing these actions on a PPC. You have much lower CPU power and RAM to work with when compared to a desktop. Pages load within seconds on my desktop, but the same page might take 15-30 seconds or more on my PPC. Downloading email on my desktop takes a few seconds, and on my PPC it takes sometimes a full minute or two. It is frustrating, I know.

Web browsing on a PPC is slower than a PC but should not be 'painfully slow' with an X51v. For example, it take 3 seconds for my X51v to start opening the Aximsite front page and it is fully loaded after another 3 seconds.

Certainly disabling powersave in the WLAN is a first step but I think the inability to obtain a server-assigned IP possibly significant. So, in addition to the powersave setting, I recommend checking for an updated firmware for the router, and
changing the channel on you router in case there is an interferring signal (be aware that the channels overlap. In the U.S., I recommend people just use 1, 6, or 11 since all other channels overlap with these three; in other words, if there is another network in your area on channel 1, you need to use 6 or higher; if a network shows on 11, stick to 6 or below. PPCs seem more susceptible to interference than laptops).

Also, if you find it still to be somewhat slow ... check your DNS settings for your ISP. I have found that if I have one DNS server above the other things run like sludge, but if I switch them around it flies. You can manually enter the DNS servers on the Network Cards settings page.

Have you tried to copy a file from X51v to a PC or vice-versa through Wireless? It is very slow. A file of 32MB takes 1 min and 44 sec. Is this normal? I think is at least ten times slower than the expected.

I have had this same problem. The Axim was taking 1 - 2 minutes to resolve a different domain while browsing. Once on a site it would browse through it at speed. e.g Once on Google, it was fine. Change to BBC and wait 2 minutes. Browse through BBC and fine.

Spent a week talking to Dell support. Updated the ROM etc but to no avail. They then decided to send me a new machine with the updated network card etc and this was exactly the same.

So, I tried the Axim at a couple of Public Wi Fi zones and it was perfect. Also gave it to a colleague to try at home and it was fine. I can only imagine that it is some sort of incompatibility with my home D-Link wireless set up. I have Laptops and PC's throughout the house that work perfectly however the Axim just doesn't want to play nicely.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I'm currently trying to solve what sounds like the same problem - Internet and e-mail are initially very slow to connect on wireless, but once on a site the speed is normal. Interestingly, I also have a D-Link router DI-824VUP. My handheld is an X51V with A12. My Internet provider is NTL in the UK (cable).

I've had a very similar problem on a Linux Kubuntu box that I use as a development web server and the problem there was IPv6. The solution there was to disable IPv6. The problem had something to do with waiting for DNS lookups to time out? This may be a clue?

If anyone else has any experience of this, let me know.

Regards, Martin
