I bought my x50 a month before receiving the wm5 upgrade. In the last couple weeks I have wasted counless hours with dell reps. recently received a rejection from the exception comittee -referring me back to tech support. I believe I have done everything suggested on this site, in order to convince Dell to echange it for a x51. I still have two months left on my warranty.
it's not clear to me why others seem to have succeeded in this ghastly endeavor.
any straightforward solutions?
thanks

Sorry for your ordeal.
Did you buy directly from Dell, with the promise of a free upgrade to WM5, or did you buy the two seperately and or from different sources?
thanks for taking interest. bought directly from dell with the promise of an upgrade as a sales pitch.
I used dell chat and explained that I had upgraded several times and after about a week activesync wouldn't work, battery became hot and it would become unusable, which required a hard reset.
Told I had the choice to buy the x51v, but was assured that wm5 would work on the x50v, and that now the IT dept wants to standardize on wm5. everything very polite, asked what my options were and was told x50v was not compatible and as they say, the rest of was history. hope this helps and good luck.
They sent me an x51v after I had 'problems' with 7 different refurbs. I politely stated that I didn't want another refurbed x50v because I had problems with every refurb they had sent me. I then asked to speak to a supervisor, and one called me about 5 minutes later. I spoke with him for 15 minutes and he dispatched an x51v with all the accessories to my house.
It's almost as funny as how Dell weaseled us into buying a device that is totally incompatible with WM5 by TELLING us that it was compatible. If you must troll do it elsewhere.
No I completely understand. I have an x51v. When I bought my axim I was almost leveed to buy the x50v with the upgrade cd because it was cheaper. Dell had the cd on their website I figured everything was good.
Luckily I found Aximsite before I made a purchase because I woulda been right there with you. If they want to make promises then they need to come through with those promises.
I would make a claim stating that WM5 was what you were going for, and instructed that the x50 was what they sold you.
There was a link here on aximsite a while back to a blog entry regarding the compaction thread that runs and filesys.exe. I would recommend getting very familiar with that. If you can prove to Dell that you are having the issues referred to in that write-up, then they will exchange the unit. You can't expect to just call them up and tell them this thing sucks - you need a valid reason.
Honestly if you are calling them up looking for a freebee - that's on your conscience. But if you have a legitimate problem with the device, then make sure you can talk the talk and walk the walk before you call them, otherwise you will sound like just another user looking for a handout. Truth be told you in fact did get Windows Mobile 5 for the x50 series, just as you were promised. Now the owness is on you to prove that the version of WM5 that Dell provided you does not work on your device.
Good luck - :)

For those trying to get your x50 replaced, I think online chat works the best. It took me less than ten minutes to get my x50 replaced with a x51. My x50 was totally unstable and sluggish and then it crashed after a month of using WM5.
what I did was calmly but strongly told the online chat guy that there is no fix for this problem otherwise the solution would have been posted already. Also tell him that the main reason you got the x50v in the first place was because you anticipated you will have to use WM5.
I told the guy that I was using it for business purposes and it was required in the office that I have it in order to communicate with my coworkers. It is essential that you tell them it is for business purposes; they will take you a lot more seriously. Also, don't rant. Instead be calm and collected.
Also, do everything they tell you to do, except the obvious ones like roll back to 2003. Play along with one of their procedures and then tell them that if there was a real procedure it would have been documented.
I got mine in 25 minutes of talking. If they tell you to wait to let them speak to their supervisor, that is a good sign.
