As the title says what is the difference between having connection that connects "to work" and a connection that connect "to internet"

Its as dumb as flight mode.

the internet connection will connect you to the internet, but you will not be able to access local shared drives. Work will let you connect to the local network shares and if you check the selection, let you connect to the internet. Its based on the idea that most people do not have a local net at home.

Always use work with the internet selected. Then you can access shared drives on your desktop.

That's not a WM5 issue, it's a WinXP issue. It is possible to limit access but it's not as easy as Win98 thanks to the way M$ modified the networking in XP. I suggest you check M$'s website.

this whole 'work' and 'internet' delusion becomes a whole lot more complex when throwing a simple VPN into the mix...

i often have to change the settings in both the connection, and the preferred networks page multiple times (when they were working just fine the day before) just to get it to connect.
