Microsoft is going to release wm5se by the end of 2006, so what do you think it will work on x51v? Maybe dell will provide such update for free? or something like that? that are your thoughts?
I will get it if it is free, about a month after they fix all the bugs people will have from WM5. Remember the first WM5 stuff, how many problems there wereEDIT: still are!

With all the users having been unhappy with WM5 so far, I think we should expect a free upgrade.
It would seem to be a better way to generate goodwill and probably less expensive than a class action lawsuit that Dell and Microsoft would surely loose, wouldn't it?

In regards to the first post, X51's and X50's are very different internally - I have ni idea why people keep thinking they're the same. An X50 is way closer to an X30. The X51 series is in a whole new realm.
It is always hope when a new release comes out. We need to see what works and what doesn't and how to fix it. This is where aximsite comes into play!! sharing experience and know how makes this site such a great experience!!

They are a little different. The x51s have more memory than the x50s. The x51s have no bakcup batt. But if the x50s can be upgraded to wm5, they cant be that different.

Many people think this because they look the same, have ROM and RAM etc. However, the memory types and the way the unit uses memory are quite different - thus why WM5 works very poorly on an X50 series.
Bottom line, very doubtful there will ever be an WM5 upgrade (even a patch) for the X50, and no way will a modified X51 ROM work.
Microsoft will provide Dell with the base image of WM5SE and then its up to Dell to build on top of it and assign it to their devices. If the question is will WM5SE function on an X51v then the answer is yes. The X51v is one of the HTC PDA's that was built with Windows Mobile 5 in mind (as edge777 said, the hardware is suited to WM5, particularly the NOR/NAND ROM scenario).
Now, if the question is will Dell release it for the X51v, that's entirely their choice. It certainly won't be free (although I'd love for Dell to prove me wrong on that). Only AKU's are free, not platform revisions.
Does anyone here know how the upgrade on the iPaq 4700 went? If I am correct, I think the existing units were offered a free upgrade if they purchased it a couple months before it was released, and then the way old units had to pay. Then the units in production were loaded with it at the factory. Sorry if that didn't make much sense.
Seeming as dell is leaving the PDA market, who knows what they might do.
