Can someone explain to me in simple, direct terms why the icons associated with programs on a SD card change from back and forth between the generic windows icon and the Icon for the application.

Is it the way the OS goes about its busness? The squence it does things? A timing issue? What?

Also is there a solution to this problem? Its not the end of the world, but it is kinda annoying.

It has to do with the sd card not being in/loaded at the time the pda tries to display the icons after a soft reset.

Also if u pop out ur sd card for a little bit, even if you dont access any of the progs, the icons screws up.

Try a soft reset. This gets to me sometimes, also.

Its almost like the ppc loses contact with the sd card.

Some apps, perhaps even WM itself in some cases, attempt to load icons before the SD card has been made ready. Some launchers and the like have options to delay for this reason.

Thank you for your responses. I am not sure if the problem(s) lies with Dell or Microsoft so I think I'll just blame both. In any case, I gather there's no real resolution.

Appreciate your input.

Although it is not a solution. there is a managable workaround. If at all possible install all of your programs on just one external device CF or SD, or on the axim itself. That way you can keep the one card in and once it is read the programs and icons are always present.

With card prices dropping a 1 gb card should be ample, with headroom to spare. ther are lots of rationales about which the program card should be, from put them on the CF because it is harder to remove, to put them on the SD because some think it is read faster and there are more inexpensive peripherals for the CF slot.

You can make your decision on how many programs you have and what you use your ax for. Good Luck.

Thanks for the hint, DeeCee. Actaully, I try to put everything I can on SD.

What I've discovered is that I am most likely to get the program icon, if I do a soft reset while the PDA is on the cradle and connected to ActiveSync. I suppose its because ActiveSync is started before SD card is recognized, but I am just guessing.
