When I used WPA with my X30, I used the Odyssey client and it worked fine. Now with my X51V I don't need to use the Odyssey client. It handles WPA directly. Turn the Odyssey client off and exit, then add your WiFi site through the Dell WLAN utility and choose WPA encryption. I have since taken the Odyssey client out of my start-up list since I don't use it. I also do not broadcast my SSID, but it will find it if you type your SSID into the profile.

Uh, no, sorry, you should have read the thread (which maybe you did later since you edited your post). That was exactly the problem. The Dell WLAN utility wasn't handling WPA correctly and I had to use the Odyssey Client. But it works now with Odyssey, thanks. :oD Actually it's probably better to use Odyssey anyway since it's friendlier.

More trouble
Now I have a new problem! Every time I disable the wireless, if the PDA sits until the password screen comes up it re-enables it! AARGH! Why can't things just work like they're supposed to on PPC? :realmad:

I found the culprit!
It's the db_notify_events system database, which launches programs when certain things happen. The problem is ALL of the software that can edit this system database is only for WM2003, but I found one that finally worked.
http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/cn_overview.html
The first program, Check Notifications, can do it. I found like 20 odclient calls in there, explaining the long slowdown. Even though the program reminds you again and again it's only for WM2003, it worked. I tried other database editors and db_notify_events editors and this is the ONLY one that worked, and I don't know why. Hopefully someone will make a specifically WM5 program for it soon.
This is the reason why, after disabling and exiting Odyssey Client, every time I woke up the PDA it took a long time to load and it said "error: cannot open /Program Files/Funk Software/Odyssey Client/odclient.exe" or something along those terms. It didn't happen when I shut down and restarted because the event is specifically for wake-ups and not for restarts.

rjking: "I connect with WPA TKIP using socket wi-fi companion with no trouble at all. Have to broadcast my network SSID to get the Axim to connect though. My Compaq laptop does not need SSID though. Love to turn SSID of. Anybody got a suggestion for that?"
Can you please elaborate on how you did that? I've tried and failed with my WiFi Companion on using WAP-PSK-TKIP. I'm forced to use WEP just to go wireless in my own home. Hmmm... not impressed.
I set my wireless router (DLink DI-624) to WPA_TKIP with catch-phrase protection and got my laptops working. So far so good - router's doing its job. Tried to set up the connection profile for my SSID on the X51V, the last tab in the new profile is giving me a hard time because I can't seem to unheck the trusted server/certificate which means I can't key in the catch-phrase in the 2nd last tab where the WPA-PSK-TKIP catch phrase goes.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Which wireless utility are you using? The Socket one?
Here's my advice: stick with WEP-64 and use only the Dell WLAN utility. Sure WEP is easy to hack, but who in the world is going to hack it? If you're worried about people stealing bandwidth, use Mac Address filters. I also have a DLink router and I found that WPA would only work with the Odyssey Client (perhaps another utility would work but the ones I saw cost money), and the Odyssey Client was so darn buggy that tomorrow I'm going to just switch back to WEP and not worry about hackers. Anyone else in the neighborhood with the knowledge of how to hack the network already has the Internet anyway, and is probably too busy probing the internet to care about my signal.:rolling:

So true, azcoyote!
With the socket WiFi Companion, I can consistently connect with WEP with the X51V. I just want to beef up the rest of my home network so unauthorized sharing my resources is not an option, hence the want for WAP-PSK-TKIP.
To my understanding the Odyssey can be a beast on pda resource but seems to be the only way to utilize the stronger encryption? I don't want to slow down my PDA any more than I have to.

Hi xflyboy
My router is a Belkin Wireless modem router in WPA PSK mode with TKIP encryption. My axim connects flawlessly with socket companion as long as my SSID is broadcasted. I assume you have tried deleting the connection then setting it up again. Do you have your router broadcasting "B" wireless or "B & G"?
I connect fine to other WEP and WPA networks with out a problem. Is it the "802.1x" tab that you are having problems with? Mine has Use IEEE 802.1x network access checked with all other options greyed out.
General Tab: Network name : "Your Network Name here"
Connects to : The Internet
Ad-hoc box is UNCHECKED
Network tab: Authentication"WPA-PSK"
Data Encryption "TKIP"
The Key is automatically provided UNCHECKED
Network key "your network key here"
Key index "1" (grayed out).
801.1x Tab : Use IEEE 801.1x network access control CHECKED (and grayed out)
EAP type: Smart card certificate (Grayed out)
Hope this helps.

Hi rjking,
Thanks for looking it up. I was keying the same setting as you until I got to the Network tab. Seems the only way I can key in network key is to uncheck the 801.1x network control box. By doing so, the 'Key automatically provided' box in the network tab can not be unchecked because it's now grayed out.
I fiddled around with this for quite awhile then give up and resigned to WEP . . . :(

Sockets reply
Just heard back from socket.
Looks like the only way to connect without ssid is via odyssey.

"Rob,
If you are using WPA you will have to setup a profile in the Odyssey Client which will disable the Wi-Fi Companion and Microsoft Wireless Zero Configuration Utility.

Hi rjking,
Sorry to trouble you again.
I managed to get the wireless AP connected to the same 3 screen prints you uploaded. When I go to the notification screen, I do not seen the globe (internet) icon in between the PPC and the AP. There is an error message "WEP password is missing" in the middle. No IP address was assigned even though my X51V is connected to the AP, hence no internet connection.
I double checked the setting to see if the network is set to connect to 'The Internet', and it is. I'm baffled.
Put it back to WEP and it's working like a charm.

Hi xflyboy.
I dunno what else for you to try. I am not familiar with your router as mine is a Belkin unit.
I will attach some images of the relevant screen shots from my router to see if that helps but the image restrictions on aximsite may make them hard to see.
Have you tried doing a backup then do a hard reset, with only socket installed and try that?
Is "AP" access point?
Are you MAC filtering?
Is power save turned off on your Axim?
If you have an error message that says "WEP password is missing" it sounds like something is not set to WPA. Is this error on the Axim or Router?
I have never tried WEP so do not know mush about that.
