WPA wifi problem?
Hey all,
I have not been able to get my x51v to work with WPA on my wireless network. I've had it working with WEP before on a different network, but I'd prefer to use WPA for this one. I tried searching the forum and it wouldn't tell me anything. Are there any known issues with WPA, or significant differences in setting up the network than WEP? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
~Michael Anthony

Sweet, thanks! :approve:

make sure your encryption is TKIP, not AES.
the axim does not decrypt AES. i'm not sure whether other WM5 devices can handle AES though. also, it must be WPA-PSK not WPA2. password between 8-64 chars.
cheers

Hmm, OK, well I know I was using WPA-PSK and I'm pretty sure it was TKEP not AES, but that's good to know. The 8-64 characters is interesting. I wonder if I used fewer characters? I'll have to keep that in mind when I try again. Thanks!

I was trying this last night and had no success either. I'm able to connect using 128-bit WEP without a problem, but as soon as I change to WPA-TKIP I cannot connect.
Using Odyssey I get the 'waiting for keys' message but it never connects successfully. I have a Linksys router. On rom A06.
I'll be interested to hear how other people have faired connecting their x51v via WPA.

Wpa Tkip
I connect with WPA TKIP using socket wi-fi companion with no trouble at all. Have to broadcast my network SSID to get the Axim to connect though. My Compaq laptop does not need SSID though. Love to turn SSID of. Anybody got a suggestion for that?

I, too, can connect with WPA-TKIP using the Dell WLAN utility and Odyssey client. I had to enter the key on initial connection setup. After that, my x51v automatically connects to the router (no need to re-enter the key).

Hmm, mysterious, mysterious, mysterious. That's the only problem with PDAs; quite often they don't make any sense, especially with buggy software like ActiveSync.

rjking, I have the same problem. Using Dell's WLAN utility, I have to broadcast the SSID, or my Ax won't see the network. I've taken some comfort in others' pointing out that disabling the SSID is the weakest of security measures, as the WPA is the best defense anyway.
If someone does have a suggestion, we'd both like to hear it.

Just popped into the forum to ask the exact same question! Odyssey client says all is well and that packets are moving both ways but I can't get the browser to hook up since I set up WPA at the weekend. (I know the network is OK 'coz the laptops connect).
Hope we get a guru involved!!
Regards
David

SUCCESS!
I have been too busy to implement the suggestions here until today, but now I have succeeded. Firstly I made my password 8 chars (it was 7 before), but I don't know if that was a problem or not, because it is not what fixed it. It started working once I used the Odyssey Client instead of the stupid Dell WLAN Utility. lol. So now it works fine.
For anyone who hasn't discovered the Odyssey Client, go to Start > Settings > Connections > Odyssey Client, enable it, and connect.
I don't recommend changing your wifi key very often rjking, because first off it's pretty darn secure so it's not like it's going to be cracked (as long as it's a good password to begin with), and as far as Windows XP goes, it can cause trouble or be an annoyance since the Windows XP wifi utilities are not very good. I've noticed if you change a WPA-PSK, instead of prompting you for the new password it'll just say "Acquiring Network Address" forever. You have to go and delete the access point from the list and let it be rediscovered. So I say just save yourself the trouble, come up with a good password, and stick to it.
