Windows File Sharing problems

I spent some time drilling through the search and previous threads, and got most of my questions answered -- but I still have two issues. I have my Network card and Connections both set to Work.

Problem #1 : I have a server here on campus that doesn't have a hostname configured, and the only way to access it is through its' IP address. WM5 doesn't seem to play well with the IP, despite being able to ping it . NetRunner can't connect and BizzDev's NetUse box just disappears without doing anything. I so far haven't figured out anyway to connect to this machine.

Problem #2 : There's a "student storage" server on campus that people access via WebDAV or Windows File Sharing. The server has a hostname and I can mount the root, but the problem is, due to the way security is handled -- it doesn't allow for directory listing (because if it was, you'd be able to see the names of every person that goes to this school) -- so you'd have to enter \\domain.edu\storage\username -- without being able to browse the folder "stroage". WM5 File Explorer, Netrunner and NetUse can all mount \\domain.edu, but is unable to go further, since it can't browse the folder "storage". I couldn't use WebDAV because I haven't been able to find a WM5 WebDAV client.

Any suggestions on either Problem would be helpful.

You should be able to type in the full path to your network shares in File explorer (although I would suggest Total commander (freeware) or Resco (payware) as alternatives). I can certainly do it on my home network so as long as it is set up for Windows file sharing, it should work.

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking with the first question but if this is also to network shares, typing in the IP should work (although, I know I've had trouble with it in the past with a previous PPC and never found a way past it).

Problem #1 is not being able to connect via IP -- the box is running Linux and Samba, so i may have to play with the settings.

Problem #2 is one of the directories inside the hierarchy not being browsable, which apparently mucks with the way Windows File Sharing works (or doesn't work) in WM5

Ex on WM5 File Explorer:
\\domain.edu -> mountable, browsable and works
\\domain.edu\storage -> moutable, browsable and works
\\domain.edu\storage\U -> not mountable, not browsable doesn't work (basically the storage folder has 26 folders, A through Z for all possible usernames, that way the client, whatever it may be doesn't explode from loading a directory full of thousands upon thousands of userdirs)
\\domain.edu\storage\U\username -> mountable, browsable doesn't work
