Speedy thought/note gathering?

All:
I teach fifth grade and lots happens minute-to-minute. I have switched from Palm T3 to Axim x51v. My goal, and request for advice from all of you, is use of the Axim for on-the-fly notetaking that I can keep for an individual's records. This might be a few words, and I don't think I want to use the tapped keyboard, but the writing module seems too limited.

Software I use NOW that might work is:

1. OneNote2007, which I have named pages for each student
2. DayNotz, which ported over to PPC WM5 (www.natara.com)
3. Participate (through StyleTap)

I need to figure out how to get these programs up in front of me faster, though. Is there a shortcut path in WM5 that I haven't read about or misunderstood? It seems too slow forn the pace of the classroom. I can't pause long during a good part of the day.

Natara has a good desktop side. OneNote 2007 is fantastic. I have just started up my "trial" of the released software and have not downloaded the new version on the Axim yet.

OK, what other ways would work better?

One of the simplest ways to get your preferred app up in front of you the quickest is to map it to a hardware button (just via Settings Buttons and choose one that hopefully you do not use frequently for its default assignment).

As you probably know, the OneNote Mobile client is still pretty limited compared to its desktop counterpart - but will sync mobile notes so still useable.

Another option - IF you can make use of .wav files - is to look at VoiceMinder from WebIS. Very clever app that allows you to map to a hardware button, press it once to start voice recording, press a second time to stop recording and send the voice note to yourself as a .wav attached to an email.

I like the voice idea, because there will be certain moments when that will have JUST the right effect in the classroom. Other times I won't be able to make any sound. I thought there was a button on the side of the unit that started the voice recorder-- I might have to use that as the WiFi is a bit undependable in my classroom and is available in few other places around our little town. I'll look at the app!

Thank you for the suggestions.

Jonathan

The button idea is a good reminder, too. I did that with my Palm: mapping one of the buttons to ShadowPlan and another to DayNotz.

What about handwriting your notes in the notes program? Then either save them in that form or use handwriting recognition to convert them to text then save them as text.

There is a side button for starting the in-built voice notes app.

Good luck with whichever method, or maybe combination of methods, you end up choosing ...
