Pocket PC registry got onto my Computer

As the title states, my Pocket PC registry had gotten onto my computer. I was making a backup of my registry one day, and I saved the reg file onto my desktop. But then in about a day, I notice that the computer thinks it is Windows Mobile. So I whenever I need to got to handango, or aximsite, it uses the PDA version. Which I do not like. Then when I was downloading some updates for WMP, it didn't let me download them. Only the verison of 10 Windows Media Player. And I wanted 11. So it did change some thing. I cannot find the registry key that did this. Can one of you guys, or gals ( ) help me?

I use Windows XP (PRO) SP2.

Admins/Mods, please move if you think this needs to go somewhere else.

Normally XP should produce a warning if you attempt to merge any *.reg file with something like "Are you want to add this information..."

Offhand I can think of a few potential solutions...

1) Run XP's Restore Tool from Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Restore and choose a date immediately prior to your registry merging. With any luck this should set your system back to its pre-PDA modification, and save you the trouble of either manually fixing all the keys yourself and/or reinstalling XP.

2) If that fails, and you have the reg file from your PDA, you could edit the pda reg file you saved on your desktop by right-clicking on the reg file and selecting "Edit". It should then safely open the reg file in notepad, and you can see which keys were modified and change the corresponding Win XP key via regedit. That could potentially be a very tedious task depending on how many keys got changed.

3) If 1 fails, and 2 is too daunting, you could restore from a backup (*.bkf) file, if you created one, or you could manually restore the registry via this method.

Good luck!

Do not use system restore.

I can try this.

I dont use backup files.
Good luck!
Thanks for your help. I will try some of these.

When you say you don't use System Restore...you don't have to manually create restore points, though you can. Windows should automatically create restore points for you, the number of days/weeks/months depending on how much drive space is allocated. Therefore, there should be auto-created restore points, unless that functionality was disabled, ready for you to use to get your system back to an earlier point.
