where to install stuff? ROM or mem card?

Hi, there I received my new Axim x51v with 2 gig SD card.

I want advice about where I should be installing things.

My guess:

in ROM
backup program
wifi
bluetooth drivers
pocket informant

in memory card
games
ebook readers
other optional stuff.
password manager
skype

That seemed logical. but when I installed a game that came with my dell bundle (Tony Hawk skater), it came with a warning message about making sure to have enough memory).

I installed it on my 2 gig SD card, but when I load it, it always gives me the error message that it lacks the memory resources to load. this happens even after a hard reset and even though I have hardly installed anything on the axim (either the card or the builtin memory yet_?

Why, oh, why would it be necessary to use valuable space on my builtin memory for a game I would use only occasionally?

I install everything into ROM on my x51v as well. Still have around 100Mb free as well. Granted I don't have many apps (few games, quite a few utilities, tomtom, etc). Most programs I install in ROM, but program data, for eg. ScummVM games, I store onto an SD card.

That's how I do it. I keep all my music on a CF card and some movies on an SD card for occasionally watching, but all programs are installed to the Device itself, the ROM.

so how much user space do I have on ROM for installing things? I have total of 256MB ROM. How much is actually usable?
How big are these programs/cab files anyway? (generally I mean).

I'm guessing config files should remain on the ROM (backing up, etc), but what about docs? Don't they take up a lot of room?

Not really. I have lots of documents, almost twenty, with quite a bit of text. They tak up a little over 1 MB. I have lots of programs installed:

Wisbar Advance 2
Adobe Reader 2
Tetris
Chess
TCPMP
PocketBreeze
iLauncher
Opera
Poker
Pocket Informant 2007
Monopoly
MemMaid
Resco Explorer
Resco Registry Editor

I still have 155 MB of space available. Unless you install every single program out there, you won't use up all your space.

Actually, I constantly struggle with not having enough space. As a rule of thumb I install only the programs that I NEED onto my ROM. Anything else goes onto a card. This way I know that my device will NEVER be full, and I can install every program I want. Look at "My PDA" and tell me you can install that on the ROM.

See, that is where the Axim really shines. Dell did such a great job designing that thing. 256 MB of ROM available to the user?
I think I have 96 in my ROM in my Windows Mobile device. I am not near to filling it and I have quite a bit installed. I can't imagine having 256 MB of space. What an incredible machine!
Not that I don't totally love my handheld, but you have to tip your hat to a Corvette when it blows by your Buick.

all programs are stand alone (don't install themselves into registry) and ran from the microdrive. when i hard reset i don't need to reinstall any programs or move any data around.

No, those are NOT all on my ROM, as I said, I only install the programs I need on my ROM. The rest go on cards. Actually, I find I fill up the ROM rather quickly, that's why I try to keep at least 100mb free, this also gives me the ability to easily move stuff around.
