I thought I saw someone with something other than calendar and contacts links at the bottom of the today screen. Is there a way to change those to other programs? Since I already have buttons for those two it would be nice to change them to other programs but I haven't found a way to do it yet.

Yes, it does a great job of this. Since I use Pocket Breeze and have tabs there for my calendar and contacts, I used iLauncher to change the left and right soft keys to Power Off and Soft Reset; very convenient!!
