On and off I debate this; so far I've always just thought.. stay with what works :) I'm a ROM version back or two.. A03 or A04 2003SE. But as I see it, the last rom version or two didn't offer much needed, and being stable is a good thing .. a fewpatches in tends to be stable. Going to WM5 means your'e back at 'version 0' (?) of the WM5 chain, so likely more unstable.
But without ever having used WM5 much .. is there any really compelling reason to upgrade, or is 2003SE good enough?
I see that sticky about 'downgrading', and it makes me nervous.. if people are willing to downgrade, then is upgrading really worth it at all?
Another note -- what percentage devices are WM5 now? All the new ones are of course, but I wonder how many folks upgraded? ie: As a developer, I like to stay with the representative majority (which turns out to be low res .. I went with the X50v since I assumed _everyone_ would go high res a year later.. how wrong I was :)
I have a x51V so I know that my experience does not necessarily apply to the x50V but some does. The only advantage I see to WM5 is battery life. I never use the Word or Excel because I have SoftMaker products and those run fine with WM2003. Otherwise I guess there is an advantage with those applications. I think the soft keys are annoying and waist space. But, that said I like WM5 better because of the battery issues. That is what matters to me. There is a significant improvement in that area. Memory management is also a plus because I can have more applications open without crashing on WM5. That is nice too. All the bugs can be worked out with advice from this site. It took months for me to work them all out. My machine is working great now. I am very happy with it.
I am still running my trusty old X5. My girlfriend got a new Ipaq with WM5 recently.
Is it just me, or was WM5 a retrograde step? (apart from persistent memory maybe). As supplied the device was unfit for purpose. Basically it didn't work when away from the cradle for long - battery drain, etc. It was only information I had acquired on this board that allowed me to fix it for her. How many users know how to, or are interested in, messing about like that? It should work out the box. I believe part of the reason for the decline in popularity of PDAs is down to WM5.
How could MS release software with such basic flaws?
I see people are having problems with later versions of ActiveSync too?
its running fantastically on my vario ii though. Fast, no obvious problems.. battery life seems good (although that is hard to tell due to phone, data and wifi use)
maybe its more to do with the implementation rather than the os itself
Well Iv updated to WM5 and patches, WM2003se still the best. The WM5 updated 2 runs fine, improved alot than default WM5 rom. The icon was pretty new, feels like holding new devices.
I do compare my Axim (WM5 upd2) with my friends 6828 WM5, almost same speed, got some delayed waiting but not worse than default WM5. Maybe it couldnt be fast as X51v but honestly runs well. The only issue is software compatibility which driven me to revert back to WM5.
upgrade for WM5 2nd patch has improve but WM2003 still better.

I'm sticking with WM2003....why fix it if it isn't broken
Exactly. Upgrading should be driven by the need to fix a problem or get a feature you need. If said upgrade does not offer that then why fool with it?
I know why you want to do it ... it's tempting. RESIST! I've wasted a lot of time in the upgrade back-and-forth cycle. Upgrading is fine if you NEED it, but a colossal waste of time if you don't.
