What is poutlook?
Exactly what is the file poutlook? I have removed it from my Startup folder, and so far it does not appear that I have lost any functionality. I thought maybe it was what enabled calendar and task reminders -- kinda like how you have to have the desktop Outlook actually running to get reminders -- but I still get reminders after I have removed it. So what does it do?
And speaking of reminders, how do I make them go away once I acknowledge them? I would have thouot that's what tapping Dismiss would do, but sometimes they still come back. If it's a task reminder, do I have to actually open the task and check it off to make the reminder go away permanently?

Pocket Outlook is a striped down version of the outlook on your desktop computer.
It your PIM (personal information management) tool. It provides you with a text-only version no html (embedded images, links, multimedia, etc.) of your email on pre-WM6 (basically all axims).
My advise is to try Flexmail. Once you try it you will be hooked. It supports full html mail. POP, IMAP, SMTP. It does not provide native HTTP (hotmail) support but instead utilizes the built-in Pocket msn client to access your hotmail. Since the built-in client lacks html support you will receive text only. If you want html. There is a work around.

I know that Pocket Outlook is the collection of PIM utilities in Windows Mobile. I was refering to the actual file namped "poutlook" found in the Startup folder. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't each PIM utility (Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes) a seperate application? At least that's what I thought since they each show up as a seperate program under running programs. So what does placing the file "poutlook" in your startup folder accomplish? I can still start each of the PIM aps without it.

I believe that PocketInformant places poutlook.lnk into the STARTUP folder. The net effect is to have PocketInformant autostart after every soft reset. I routinely delete this shortcut from the STARTUP folder and everything still works just fine without the annoying autostart of PI.

Ah. That explains a lot. I had trial of Pocket Informant a while ago. But I wonder why they call the file poutlook and not pinformant or pi or something like that.

Poutlook is the built-in app for WM; if you install PI and have it set as the default PIM , there's a registry change that points poutlook to PI so the calendar, contacts and task apps will open in PI. Poutlook will always be on your system, even if you don't install PI.

Actually, the poutlook that comes with WM is in ROM and shows up as being in the \Windows\ directory. PocketInformant creates another poutlook in the \Windows\ directory to override ROM, and additionally creates a shortcut, poutlook.lnk, in the \Windows\StartUp\ directory. This shortcut may be deleted, even if you do have PocketInformant installed.

Is this specific to WM5? I have 2003SE and both poutlook.exe and poutlook.lnk are in \Windows, and are Read-only, Hidden, System and in Rom.
If I uncheck "Make Default PIM" in PI, the poutlook files remain unchanged, the only change is to the registry.
From my experience, PI just creates the link in \Windows\StartUp, this is with PI2007 rev 4, but all previous versions did the same thing.
