Real Player and WM5

Has anybody managed to install Real Player onto a newly upgraded WM5 iPAQ? I have upgraded my hx2410 and can not load it up because the Real Installer keeps asking me for the to install Activesync 3.1 or higher. Of course I have AS 4.0 so it bugs out and cancels the install.

1 Do I need to install AS 4.0 and reload AS3.8 just to install Real Player?
2 Is there a CAB installer out there I can use?
3 Is there any other other application that will stream RealAudio like Real Alternative for the Desktop?

The BEEB (BBC) only make their shows available to "listen again" in RA. Which means no more Pete Tong or Steve Lamacq at work. I was so getting used to using my iPAQ like a portable internet radio.

Follow Up

I have done some heavy searching through the Real.Com FAQ and knowledge base and have found this article.
http://real.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/real.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid%3d843'

It says a few interesting things, like make sur the iPAQ is connected when you launch the installer, disable the auto disconnect so that the status stays connected. But the last part of the article really bugged me:

Quote:
Try the RealPlayer Mobile for Pocket PC installation again. If you continue to receive this error, reinstall MS Outlook. MS ActiveSync is dependent on MS Outlook and if MS Outlook is corrupted, it will cause problems with MS ActiveSync. If this does not fix your error, please contact your MS ActiveSync Technical Support.
Now here is what bugs me.
  • MS Outlook is definately not corrupted. I live in my Outlook so I would know straight off the bat. Besides it can not possibly be corrupt on both the home and work PCs.
  • I seriously doubt the problem lies with ActiveSync, I am sure that version 4.0 might have changed things around a little bit. But surely no one expect MS to change Windows XP because you can no longer play you DOS games properly. I hate this type of answer a lot and find it to be a lazy. If you are developping a programme for a platform, configure it so that the standard installer can load it, don't try and re-write the installer.

Now in defense of this message, it does pr-edate WM5 by about a year so it is completely irrelevant and useless.
Please don't anybody uninstall Outlook and Activesync hoping to geta diferent result.

I hope this has been helpful.

Can't help you but I'm interested as to how you go about "listen again" on the PPC using the RealPlayer. I can listen to the live streams but when I try to "listen again" on the BBC weblink it tries to open up the BBC Radio Player but doesn't open and play the file on the PPC.

Thanks in advance.

You are quite right it does do that on the PPC. So you have to grab the audio links from the BBC Player on your desktop then stick those links inside an empty notepad txt file and save it as bbcradio1_tong.ram . Then stick all those files in a folder somewhere on your device that you can then browse to within Real Player. Or you can do what I did and create a HTML page which you link to on your default.htm page that links back to that folder. PIE is actaully smart enough to open up the links in Real Player and start the stream for you. This sounds more complicated than it really is, but once you have it sorted out, you can be listenning the Essential Selection in the garden or from any hotpsot.

Now if only Real can release and WM5 version before BarBQ season in The Great White North is over.

Sorry for being thick, but how do I grab the audio links? I don't see .ram links. For example, the Chris Moyles link is http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/netwo...1/r1moyles_fri

Cheers

You are not far off, once you understand that all real media have their own protocol (RTSP) like http then you can reconstruct the link based on their server: rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk and then add on the querystring from the link above : /radio1/r1moyles_fri.ra

you then get "rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio1/r1moyles_fri.ra" which if you paste that into real player for windows or real player for pocket pc will call up Chris Moyles' Friday show. Now stick that in a text file and rename it moylesfri.ram and when you can click on it it will open real and stream the file for you.

Now that I have spealt this out they will probably rename the server or change the links and we will have to figure it all out again.

BTW if some tech or engineer at Beeb is reading this:
These are not the high bandwidth links that you prevent non UK ip address from accessing. Please don't shut them down.

Still no news from Real about an updated installer. Has anyone managed to find a CAB installer?

Adapted from here

1) Go to the page on Real.com, fill in your details and choose the PocketPC version

2) On the next page choose RealPlayer for Pocket PC 1.1 Preview Release, and you'll download RealOnePlayerPPC11PR.exe

3) Begin the install, DON'T click OK when the error screen appears

4) Go to Start->Run and type %TMP% and when you press enter, your temp folder will open

5) Find the subfolder called ~rnsetup which is where the install program will have decompressed itself.

6) There's the REALPLAYER.CAB - copy it to your WM5 device and run it from your WM5 device

I'm still in the process of testing but it appears to work at the basic level.

YOU ARE A GENIUS!!! This so totally worked!

I am actually listening to 5Live as we speak all in the world is fine again. I don't know why they simply didn't make the cab available in the first place it's not as I will be contacting Real if anything goes wrong as their customer service is non existant!

Just FYI, you don't even have to get to the error message to use SimonTALM's workaround. As soon as the installer gets to the first screen ("Welcome to the RealOne Player for PocketPC(ARM)" etc.), go to the temp folder and the CAB should be there, in ~rnsetup.
