HP does not intend to upgrade this model to windows mobile 5.0. Copied directly from HP's web site:

Will HP support MS Windows Mobile 5.0 on currently shipping converged products? (h6300 and h6500)
HP wants to ensure that the functionality and overall customer satisfaction of the iPAQ product line is not compromised. The h6300 and hw6500 product lines are significantly more complex products that function on mobile operator networks. Mobile operator networks require stable product performance in order to maximize quality of service for their end-users. In some cases in order to maximize service performance with the new operating system, hardware changes are required. Hardware modifications to on the h6300 and hw6500 are not planned; therefore HP will not provide MS Windows Mobile 5.0 on the iPAQ h6300 and hw6500 models.

Thanks. I apprecaite the feedback. Windows Mobile 2003 it is then. Hopefully HP will have a new version soon as my 6515 freezes alot. Maybe its other programs that are installed - don't know. I keep completing hard resets and reinstalling to see where the problem is.

Just currious, can a user even install WMobil 5 on the 6515. I understand HP isn't going to make it available, but was just curious if it can be installed directly.

The OS on PPCs needs a lot of customizing to add the correct drivers and utilities necessary for the proper functioning of the device.

I've read suggestions that if you are proficient with programming, you might be able to pull the drivers from an earlier version and incorporate them into a different OS but it's certainly not the capability of a typical home user and if it were simple, I'm convinced HP would have done it by now for all devices capable of utilizing WM5 (some devices just don't have enough memory to utilize the OS). Of course, there's also the legality of the situation since you would not have a license for this version of the software.

If your PDA is freezing a lot, it could be a particular software that you've loaded. One way to figure out which software might be causing this problem is to hard reset your PDA (to clear everything off of it). Then install the first software product. Let it run for a few days. If it runs with no problems, load the next software product. Let it run with the 2 softwares loaded for a few days. If it runs with no problems, load the next product and so forth until you load the software that causes the problem.

Where are you loading your software? If you are loading it all to main memory, you may have so much stuff loaded that you don't have much RAM available to run the programs. Since RAM is at a premium on the PDA, I have loaded most of the third party programs I use to IPAQ File Store or even to a storage card. I have heard some software prefers to be loaded in main memory, and some software that I have loaded has told me that it needs to be loaded to main memory (and so I have loaded it there). I haven't had any problems with the software I loaded to File Store or to the Storage Card and don't notice any problems with performance.

I also try to copy most of the files that I like to keep with me to a storage card. I use Mighty Sync, a third party software, to keep these files synchronized, so I am not constantly having to move the files from the MY Documents folder in main memory. Mighty Sync runs whenever I use ActiveSync, and works very well.

Best regards,

Julie

Julie:

Thanks. I have started down the route. In the past, I have installed the software in the default locations. Here is what I have installed and may/may not use based on how things go:

Kelbran Pocket Calendar
Tillansoft Pocket Tweak
Resco File Explorer
Zeo Nokeyboard
Microsoft Pockets Streets v2005
HP Protect Tools
Active Sync 4
SpB Pocket Plus
Microsoft Voice Command

I don't have a stoarge card yet (on order) to install in different locaitons. Of these program, the voice command, zeo nokeyboard, and resco file exlplorer I use all the time. The others I use sometimes for just certain capabilities.

Do you know of any utilities that allows me to see all my appointments on Today. Seems I can only see seven days out with the default calendar and I need to see past seven days. Also, any utilty that display the current running programs - line a taskbar so I can switch to the different running programs.

There are many today screen plug-ins that could probably give you what you want in the way of viewing your appointments for more than a week. I don't use any of them, but here's a third-party software seems to provide the features you desire. It also provides a lot of other features that you might find useful:

http://www.sbsh.net/products/pocketbreeze/

Again there are many products that allow you to switch to running programs, but you can also view and switch amongs running programs by tapping the memory icon, then selecting the running programs tab. All programs that are running will be displayed here and you can select the activate button to move to any of the programs shown.
