Encoding (converting) video on your pocketpc?

Gents, (m/f)

I'm going to India for a month. Im bringing my axim x51v (of course). Now I have my eyes set on this k-rad camera - the panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 which.. creates motion jpeg. 5Mbyte for 4 seconds! Ack.

My question, as obvious from the title as well:

Are there ways for me to use the PPC to transcode a motion jpeg (.mov, VLC plays it fine) to say x264 or mpeg4

Tips links grave tidings welcome..

You can use a computer but I don't think there are any encoders for ppc.

I would not attempt to do video conversion with a PPC - there's just not enough horsepower there. Video conversion is extremely processor-intensive and EATS memory. Use a PC for that.

Gents,

I really am aware that the PPC is not the ideal platform for this, but the point is I expect to be away from any PC for a month. In this time I expect to make lots of movies. With motion JPEG I can fit like 20 minutes on a 2GB card, with h264/x264 or even xvid/mp4 that could be doubled, tripled, who knows, without real loss of quality.

Hence the request.

I don't think there is any SW to do this because the PPC is not a good platform for doing this (the processor is too slow and there is not enough memory).

No chance, I'm afraid. There's not nearly enough RAM available to do the work and even if there was with such a slow processor it would take about a week to do what you want it to.

Sadly, PDAs aren't quite up to being a replacement for a laptop yet!

Could you not explore the possibility of using Internet cafes to do your conversions. After all India is reputed to be a leader in software production.
