How do you upgrade a X50v from windows mobile 2003 to windows mobile 5 or 6?
I searched the forum but couldn't find any useful articles. Could any kind soul help me out? I am new to ppc. I heard people saying that it is possible, but is it good or not good? what are the pros and cons? And what do you need to do in order to upgrade to a windows mobile 5 or 6? Thanks for the help.
Dell released a wm5 update for the x50 series. They stopped selling it, because of the fact that it was a failure. Most people complained of a slower device than before and other problems. A few have had luck, though by tweaking it so it works.
Dell once sold the cd, but u may be able to find it on ebay. With wm5 you get persistant memory, which means rom is used instead of ram for storage. Advantages are longer battery life, and u dont lose everything when your battery dies. But it isnt a stable os on the x50 series, as i said earlier. On the x51 series, it is a lot more stable with the latest rom upgrade.
Wm6 though, was never released officially for the x50 series, so the only way to get it is illegally, which is forbidden to be discussed on this site.

You can get the WM5 upgrade CD off of e-bay, and then Dell has released an upgrade ROM for WM5 (once you've installed the upgrade), and it works fairly well. If you're really new to PPC's though, I would just keep to WM2003se.

IMHO you don't. Leave well enough alone - WM2003 on an X50 is solid as a rock and the upgrade to WM5 is reported to be not good. WM6 is not available for the devices (except illegally).
Even though I agreed that this user should stay with WM2003 being new to PPCs, can I just say that
I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THE "IF IT AINT'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT" LINE!!!!
If we all lived by this saying, we'd be back in the stone ages! Horses worked fine for transportation, paper and pen worked fine for keeping track of information, mail worked fine to send messages - BUT, there are some people in this world who enjoy advancement, trying new things, tweaking stuff. Sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't. But, could we quit discouraging people from trying new stuff and moving into the future!!!!

Feel better?
No one is suggesting not moving ahead. The suggestion is that the device as-made be left to run with the software that was designed for it. WM5/WM6 were designed with newer hardware in mind. If more people observed "If it ain't broke ..." then there would be less trouble. If we were to follow your advise then we'd be driving around in horse-carriages retro-fitted with V8 Engines and built-in stereos.
