Windows CE network error

Hi,

can someone please tell me how to get rid of that annoying error message I get about every 5 minutes when my Dell Axim X51v is in its craddle:

Windows CE-Network
The IP-adress assigned by the server cannot be accessed.
Try again later or enter the IP-adress manually.

I have no idea what I have done to produce this message nor how I can get rid of it.

Thanks for the help!

Try undocking the unit then check Start-->Settings-->USB to PC and try unchecking "enable advanced network functionality" and see if this eliminates the problem. If you want to be able to use your PC's network connectivity while docked, check to make sure that the Axim's IP address 169.254.x.x isn't being blocked by any firewall programs and that your system is actually assigning such an IP address to the Axim. You can check this by dropping to a command prompt, entering "ipconfig /all" and seeing if the 169.254.x.x is assigned to the Axim.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply but I am having a bit trouble with it, I am not into network stuff, so can you clarify a bit for dummies, please.
First what does the two x.x mean what actual numbers are those and where can I find out.
Second , when I enter ipconfig /all in the command line of windows xp a dos window pops up for about two seconds then immediately disappears.
Where exactly can I check if the Windows Firewall doesnt block that adress I can only find programs and ports that it blocks.

Thanks for your patience in advance.

x.x refers to any IP number. For example, my Axim typically has an IP address of 169.254.2.2 (x.x being the last two digits). It's just sort of a shorthand for "where x can be any IP number from 0 to 254". For ipconfig /all, click Start-->Run, type cmd and then when the command prompt window comes up, type the ipconfig /all . If you're using the built-in Windows firewall, it's probably not blocking the activesync programs as the activesync programs should be listed under the Exceptions tab of the Windows firewall. I wasn't sure if you were using a 3rd party firewall like Zonealarm or other that would tend to explicity block activesync and the Axim from being assigned an IP address.
