Word doesn't show in Axim after synching

I was dismayed to see that almost all my Word docs (about 100 of them that were synched from PC to WM file in PC and then synchronized to Axim x51, WM 5.0) show up as unreadable....a few mysterious computer squares and symbols but very little "text." The text files I've transferred seem to be all right, as long as I haven't converted them by saving to Word in the Axim. (That's always recommended if one edits the file....dang.)

What is happening? I just deleted all Axim's medical files and began to copy them in the PC from their original Word set up into text files but the thought of doing that with all dismays me.
I have had no trouble with the Palm OS even though it isn't Word Mobile based. (I'm also using a used Sony Clie' Palm OS device.)

What version of Word and what OS are you running on your computer?

Win XP, Word 2000.
It seems to me I was able to see all the Word docs when I first synched to the Dell, but since then I've made a hard reset, soft resets, who knows, but the text files remained all right. (There you are Julie, always on top of things!)

If you copy the .doc files directly to an SD card (and not sync them at all), are you able to open them and read them okay on your pocket pc?

I'm all tied up right now, shall try tonight or early tomorrow...but do you mean copy directly from PC to a card? I don't have a memory card reader yet.
Or, copy the files IN the device to the SD card and then try to read them? ~~ I cleaned up the medical files in the Active Synch and synched new text files, they seem OK. But ouch, 149 files in all; I'd have to replace a lot of those. Or, I can try to read old ones that are backed up in the card. I shall report. ~~ Active Synch won't let me set up anything until it's connecting and by then...it's connecting. Very frustrating.

Copy the files directly to a storage card from your computer (get a card reader).

Your pocket pc should be able to read Word document files and there's no reason why these files need to be converted through activesync.

I planned to get a card reader...OK, even more reason to get one. Thank you. (just saw the Thanks button on the screen, it's way over to right and my screen never showed it unless I scrolled.) ~~ I saw that your tutorial What Can I Do With My Dell Axim was highly recommended in "SmartPhone & Pocket Pc how to Guide 2nd Ed." They didn't note your name but I knew whose article it was. (I'll try to find the page no.) (I've just subscribed to the magazine and that was an extra.)

No, it's not my article. I think Gigi wrote that article.

Oops, you are right. I was reading your great blog and articles, too. I don't think I've been in my right mind since getting both a Sony Clie' and a Dell Axim, two different OS's to learn and a never-ending series of websites to explore. Thanks again.
