I am a Mac user, so I cannot use the .EXE that a lot of PC programmers use. For the most part, I can download most .CAB files, but every once in a while, I get one that is in text mode. I have not yet figured out how I can use these. Could someone explain this to me?
I still need to know how to download .CAB files that are in text, but I found the .CAB file SdkCerts.cab within the MvRTrueVGA_v1.3.zip, so that part of my question has been dealt with.
I am still interested in the first question, though. Do I need to get a .CAB installer?
That's never happened to me. Have you tried downloading the .CAB files directly to the pocket pc via WIFI connection?

Unworthy Servant of God,
I'm unsure what device you are using to download the cabs but the 2 you listed downloaded fine on my x51v using opera.I've seen that happen before and I think you can right click it and choose save target as. This is with a windows based box. As far as a cab installer assuming you're able to get it, I've used cabinstal for years on 4 different ppcs. It's free and works like a charm.
.....however, CABINST does not work (and is not needed) on WM5.0 pocket pcs.

I have tried downloading directly to the Axim X51v using PIE, but I still get the .txt version. I have also tried the "Save as target" which in the Mac is a little different wording (can't remember the exact wording - but the same effect), but it downloaded as a .txt file.
I have downloaded lots (100's) of .CAB files, and this has only happened on about 15 to 20 times. It is not a big deal, but I was just wondering. That is why I never thought of getting a CabInstaller, since it works most of the time.

It works on mine. (x51v) Possibly it's not needed but I've installed all the software on my x51v from .cab files stored on my sd card. The advantages I've found are 1. No need to make the .cab file read only so it doesn't self delete after install. Just check the box "do not delete cab file. 2. Easy to make a sub folder when installing to a storage card. ie. I install to a folder named "program files" and under that folder I create a sub folder with the name of the software I'm installing. Keeps things nice and neat.
Edit: I stand corrected. Just realized I've installed everything to device memory on my x51v and not the sd card like I did on my x50v. Cabinstl will just bring up the standard install dialoge and will not install the software to a sub folder on a wm5 os device.
I keep all my .CAB files on my CF card, just in case something goes wrong. I only have three programs that need a PC so far.
1. MSReader
2. Pocket e-Sword
3. Mobile Office 6.1
I am currently looking for the .CAB file for the latest AvantGo version (AgPPCEN.exe). I was able to download it in .EXE, but have not been able to get a .CAB for it. I wrote AvantGo, but they have yet to respond. IF you have it or know someone that does, could you send it my way. THANK YOU.
I have been able to either get the company to send me a .CAB file or I have used FileJuicer and gotten the .CAB files that way.
Thank you all for your input.

The Following User Says Thank You to For This Useful Post:
Have you tried running the exe on the desktop? Usually it will leave a .cab file in either c:/program files/software name or c:/program files/microsoft activesync/software name. I don't know if a mac works the same way but if not do you have access to a windows box that you can try this on? Then just copy the .cab file to the cf card.

Iggy you just made me think to find a cab extractor. Thanks
Mako, sorry to tell you this...but I am a Mac. .EXE files do not run on my desktop.
Thank you for trying, but used PC's for twenty years. Since I started using Mac's, I'd never go back. I have to use PC's from time to time. But the computers that I use on a day to day basis are iMac G5 PowerPC (One volume running Tiger 10.4.11 and one volume running Leopard 10.5.1) in my room, a iMac Intel Mini (running Tiger 10.4.10) at my office, and a PowerBook G4 (running Leopard) for travelling.
I set-up computers for our missionaries when they go to Africa. PC's are what they usually use, but since most of the missionaries are Mac users, I make the PC's as Mac-ish as I possibly can with WindowBlinds, RocketDock and sometime RK Launcher.
