I have performed a search on this topic but got overwhelmed with information.
Is there a way to get rid of the clutter in main memory when I really don't know what I am doing?
I have a Dell Axim X51 running Windows Mobile 2005 and it has 64 MB in RAM and 128 in ROM. I currently have 14 megs free in storage and 29 megs free in programs. .When I select the "Find large files using storage memory" it appears to include files on the SD card. I think I performed some cleaning of temp files but am not sure if I even got this simple task accomplished correctly
You can't delete any of the preinstalled applications that come loaded on the Axim. It is risky to start deleting files in main memory without knowing what they are used for. I've read quite a few threads from users who started cleaning up their memory and then applications didn't work properly.
You can move applications you've installed to the pocket pc to your storage card by uninstalling the application, then reinstalling it to the storage card.
You can also move most all of the files you find in the My Documents folder to a folder on your storage card.
If you use email on your pocket pc, you can change an option within the messaging application so that any emailed attachments are saved to the storage card.
If it's been a while since the last time you performed a clean reset, you might think about doing a major cleanup. Perform a clean reset and set everything up from scratch. Then only install applications that you use regularly - making sure to install them to your storage card (you'd delete everything on the storage card too and start over again from scratch.).

I have not tried those programs, but will try one. I did install Total Commander but it seems a little complicated to use.
Total Commander is a file explorer program, so it won't necessarily tell you which files to keep/delete. As Julie said, it's risky to delete files from internal memory without knowing exactly what you are deleting. You might want to do a backup before deleting unknown files.
A hard reset, as Julie also mentioned, is another option to really start clean. I do this every once in awhile; it gives me a chance to make sure I update my programs as well.
Thanks for your input.
I ended up doing a hard re-set and spent the last few hours getting wifi, bluetooth and Mobipocket back in working order. I was able to do this in large part to the good information on this site.

That's great! Now that you've got the pocket pc back to good working order and before you start getting it loaded up with stuff, take a backup of it. Store the backup file in a safe place on your computer. Then when you perform the next hard reset, you can restore from this backup file and be in really good shape without having to spend a couple of hours again setting these things up.

The Following User Says Thank You to Julie For This Useful Post:
Sync programs are defined by host pc operating system,
Ax51v on WinXP use ActiveSync 4.0 to 4.2 versions and
Under Vista you use Vistas WMDC (windows media center).
ActiveSync is free @ Microsoft site, version 4.5 is for WM6
devices although it will work for 51v
What would you consider a good backup program? New to forum and the Axim 51V. I am also looking for a good Sync program.
Sprite Backup and SPB Backup are the favourites. One great benefit of a dedicated backup utility over anything ActiveSync or the built-in utilities can offer is the ability to create self-extracting restores. What this means is that it creates a backup file that can be restored without being connected to the PC. If you happen to be on the road and need to restore, you're able to do so with a tap of the stylus.
I've tried most of the backup applications out and they all work fine. I prefer Sprite because it provides the most flexibility and features.

Technically, you can remove preinstalled programs if you have the right tools (not on the pocket pc).
I have also found that (depending on the person), that Dell either made the pagepool too big or too small. The pagepool is also changable.

Sure you can, but the OP stated they didn't really know what they were doing.
I am a seasoned Pocket PC user and I've never tried moving applications from main memory to a storage card, and I wouldn't advise anyone else to either, especially someone who has stated they don't know what they are doing. Why bother anyway, when it is so easy to simply uninstall and reinstall to the storage card?
