Windows XP Doesn't recognize AXIM USB

I think this may be a hardware problem, but almost every time I hook up my AXIM X51v to the docking station the work desktop says it doesn't recognize the USB device. There are rare occasions after trying several times that it does recognize the X51v.

How can I isolate the problem?

On my home system I have never had a problem with the XP Windows recognizing the X51V when placed into the docking station.

The docking module on the home system is the one that came originally from DELL. The docking module at work I bought from eBay and it is about three years old. Do the docking modules wear out?

Most recommendations are to plug the USB cord directly into a USB port on the computer and to avoid using USB hubs (the USB ports on a docking station could be considered a USB hub). I encounter similar performance when I plug into my computer's docking station, so I don't plug into the docking station but plug the cord into a USB port on the computer. It is a hassle, but I have never found another way to make this connection more stable.
