New software for the new OS.?! GOOD LORD!

Guys,

I have invested about 100$ on software, and just now someone told me that there might be a problem if I upgrade to WM.5 !!!!!

Tell me this will not a problem,
calm me down please!

Most software came from "good homes" and well known software companies, do you this they will offer free upgrade for people who bought the software few months ago (in case wm 5 takes few more months) ?!

thank you

I am not overly concerned about the ability of current software running on WM5. The changes in the operating sustem do not preclude using existing software. Most reputable sofware suppliers are now testing and will fix as many issues as possible. As with all technolody these days, changes are so rapid it may take some time to fully debug every posssible combination of software a user may load. There are still problems with incompatable software now, and most suppliers have not addressed the true VGA capabilities of certain devices (hx4700 in my case).

As far as free, it depends on the commitment of the supplier to keeping customers.

Just my experience and opinion, not based on any "expert" testimony

I wish I spent $100 on software

If it is anything like other upgrades (with a bit more changes under the hood), you will find a mix of those that support it for free, those that continue to work, those that offer a low cost upgrade and, well, those that just don't.

You can always question the devs about this.

The other option is to simply stick with WM2003SE. This new Windows OS really isn't changing the way we "PDA". It's nothing ground breaking. I mean there are lots of people on this board still using WM2002.

I am willing to upgrade solely for this...

"RAM is now reserved for running programs, just like it is on a desktop PC. You can no longer install applications in RAM"

I think thats quite defining as it lets you fully exploit a performance related factor being the main memory of your PDA. Although not ground breaking as pc's have done this since the dawn of time it is a brilliant addition to the mobile OS system and well worth the upgrade.

As said in the articles in this sections. WM5 is not a completely new operating system but moreso an upgrade to the older wm2003se. So basically following that its like going from win98 to win98se. No "major" under the hood changes but enough to make you notice added fixes new features. So i doubt many software app + games etc will be affected and im sure if certain titles are they will be addressed for free in good time by the developer with a patch or new release.

Speaking of compatibility...

the 128MB upgrade for the 4700 doesn't require new drivers...will the new OS be able to support the upgraded RAM? I know they just replace the chip with a 128mb one...guess we'll have to wait and see, right?

You know, now that the ipaq hx2755 is pretty stable and running somewhat smoothly on WM2003, v1.10.09 ROM, The only reason I can see for REALLY upgrading to WM2005 is that MS upgraded the Pocket Word / Excel applications to be more realistic in terms of functionality.

This I gotta see, but I'm gonna have to take this one slowly. Don't count on me being a first to test this OS on the handheld. Heh. :-)
