Basically, in hive mode anything changed in the registry by a program is not kept saved after a soft reset, in persintent mode everything works in the same way it's now.

Wow! That's pretty powerful stuff! I can see where application developers may want to use that feature in debugging and testing, but since it's probably on a global (device) level, I am not quite understanding the need for it by the user (owner).

If in Hive mode, where is the registry image kept, in RAM as opposed to FS?

More information about this new WM5 hack here

http://www.tweaks2k2.com/portal/foru...&showtopic=175

From the point of view of users the main use of this trick is to have an easier way to apply any hack or changes to the registry. Usualy when you do that manualy you soft reset your PPC using the little hole and according to those with WM5, when your device comes back your changes are gone.

Please read the xda forum and you will find more info about all this.

OK...that makes no sense...

If the standard WM5 installation is Hive mode, where nothing is saved after a soft reset, how can we keep everything from being lost when the battery dies? Hmmm....

One of WM5's BASE goodies is it's ability to not lose anything when the battery is dead or taken out...ie a HARD reset. But if we do a soft reset we lose registry settings? We reset registry for the OS (no programs work)?
Somethings not right.....

I already read those threads...also how that led to a thread that Buzz said all Memory was now acessable and how someone wanted it to use RAM for ram and the ROM for program storage...which is what it already does. But that one is excused because it was posted in april before WM5 was announced with that ability. Well...all those posts were about the RAM and were back in April.

So anyway...how does resetting with software differ from resetting with the button? a reset is a reset, right?

And if a program makes changes to the registry (like many do) then "we" do a soft reset to "reboot" the OS we lose the changes...eliminating the changes the program put in...still doesn't make sense.

It'll probably take me some time, but I don't see how this was avioded considering how many of us manually soft-reset often after programs are installed..... :bang: :bang: :bang:

Unfortunately, the xda forum and the experience of some of my betatesters from that forum with WM5 installed is all I have.

there are many other things changed in WM5... the soft reset for software does work different than the soft reset by hardware, how and what, I don't know, another change is in the hard reset. I can tell you that the procedure used by many programs to hard reset the unit does not work any more. So no more hard reset by software.

I'm sure somebody can explain it...who knows...things might have changed and we don't know about it yet. :D

Persons change, things change, that's call life... and you know where I'm coming ;)

But for every stone in your path is a workaround ;) sooner than later somebody will find a way to do a hard reset by software again ;)
