WM5 possibly higher risk if infected

Hello

This is my first post, I wanted to say hello to everybody.

On Tuesday I found an rx3715 on a shelf in a store, it was priced down and 50% rebate (originally 699 CHF ~530 US$, priced down to 598 CHF ~455US$ and 50% off, that makes 299 CHF ~227 US$)
So I couldn't resist and because the Touch Screen of my Zire died a day before I bought it (nice deal wasn't it?).

Now I have WM2003SE, and no upgrade will be released, but while I was thinking to make my own upgrade (I know this is illegal) I thought about the new memory structure.

WM5 installs every program on the flash rom part, this survives a hard reset, but what about viruses? they will also remain on the flash and to re-flash a device is more complicated that to hard reset such (and way more risky). And are there protected areas? Can a virus now delete important system files?

So is that really possible? Did Microsoft not minded this or am I wrong?

I like the iPAQ but the PIM functions of a PalmOS device are missing!

Realize that when you hard reset a Windows Mobile 5 device the flash rom is in a sense, "reflashed". A hard reset clears out the flash ROM on a WM5 device. The only part it doesn't clear out is the hidden partition where the OS is stored. Since this hidden partition exhists on the wm2003se, we can conclude that it's very hard for viruses, ( I havn't seen any yet) to reach it.

Thus you shouldn't worry at all! :) Just enjoy your PDA and that Styletap program i recommended.

In theory it's definitely possible, but no more risky than previous versions of PocketPC / Windows Mobile OS. As darkdestroyer mentioned, the base image files are "separated" in a sense from everything else on your ROM.

Technically speaking, I'm sure a virus could be written that could access the image files. Right now there is not currently anything like this making its way around mobile devices.... but I wouldn't count it out for good.

But also as darkdestroyer mentioned, in theory you're no more protected on an older version of PPC2000/2002 or WM2003/2005, as the image files are stored in basically the same way across all of these versions.

Thanks, I thought that on older Versions simply the RAM is emptied, on WM5 I wasn't sure about it.
