Sprite Backup (version 5)

:(

Just bought and upgraded to the long awaited version of sprite backup that is compatible with WM 5.0, for my Ipaq Hx2795, and I just went to run it for the first time, and got an error message saying:

Credant Mobile Guardian has been detected but is not currently supported by sprite backup. Sprite backup will now exit.

I am not currently encrypting my ipaq with mobile guardian, but I do know that the device comes with this preloaded in rom.

Anyone figure out a way to run sprite backup on their ipaq with wm 5?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately there are compatability issues between Sprite Backup and Credent Mobile Guardian. Sprite Backup will not work on devices with Credant Guardian Shield or HP Protect installed. We have notified Credent of the issues and are currently waiting for them to get back to us so we can work out a solution.

Credent will support Sprite Backup in the future.

For Updates please check back regularly.

Thanks
Clinton

The HP protect/credant program does not work with windows mobile 5 properly anyhow. The encryption for contacts, calendar, tasks and notes does not work yet and hp said eventually there will be an update correcting this.

I guess I will ask for a refund for sprite backup for now. That is a shame, I thought I could finally backup my unit. I have been a sprite backup customer for years, and just figured it would work, since all prior versions did, so I bought it without trying it.

I still don't understand why even microsoft removed any means of backup from their activesync program.

I don't use ActiveSync 4.1, but I have heard some variation of the old backup utility is still there. You don't see any option for this in ActiveSync?

Maybe it only applies for those still running 2003 OS and also running A/S 4.1....

I use AS 4.1 and WM 5 and there is no back up utility. Question though, is this a problem with the device or WM 5? I've got an rx1955 and was planning on using Sprite backup, but if it doesn't work with WM 5, I can't see spending money on it.

Thanks much.

I think the new version is supposed to be compatible with WM5, but just not units that come installed with Credant Guardian or HP Protect. You could email sprite and ask them if it is compatible with your unit.

That's correct, It'll work with WM5. It just doesn't play well with Credant software.

Prime(and only one reason), why I have no interest in upgrading to WM5. I'll bet less than 5% of my software titles will operate in WM5.

I've been playing with an Axim that has WM5 and personally it's best use is a paperweight unless you're only using the basic components that came with the unit.

Has SPB finally released a product that doesn't suck the memory dry?

Hi:

FWIW Here's a message from Clinton Chang at Sprite re. new version 5.10:
Sprite Software is pleased to announce the release of Sprite Backup 5.10, which includes important fixed and new functionality

You can download the new version by clicking on the following link and following through to the upgrade 5.0 to 5.1 page. Then simply enter your authorization code for 5.0 and you will be able to download Sprite Backup version 5.1 for free.

http://www.spritesoftware.com/upgrade.php

The new features contained in this release are:

Fixes:
- Credant/HP protect tools support, affecting iPAQ Pocket PC's
- Pin lock fix. Sprite Backup will now do a scheduled backup when users have a PIN lock engaged.
- Minor fixes and tweaks from the previous version.

New Features:
- Self Extracting backups
- Upgrade mode. You can now restore a backup across ROM's.

We would once again like to thank all of our customers for their patience while we worked on the various fixes and new features in this release.

Please note you must uninstall any previous versions of Sprite Backup before you install this version or you may have problems on install.

Please also note that any backups taken with version 5 of Sprite Backup cannot be restored with this new version. Because of this we recommend taking a backup as soon as you install this new version.

If you have any problems, queries or feedback on the new version please log into our online support system CRM Desk and post there. To log into the CRM Desk click the following link and select “Ask a Question”

http://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/

Thanks
Clinton

I've got both SPB and 5.10 of Sprite and my full backups with both show Sprite wins by almost 40% on backup size when comparing.
