For anyone looking to buy a new PocketPC, my advice is do NOT go out and buy an X50V or whatever thinking you'll be able to upgrade to WM2k5. Wait for the new devices to come out with it.
And how long will the wait be? Any idea when the next model will come out with WM2005?
Speculation is that the OS is coming around June/July.
Yeah but, then it will take a month or 2 before we see it. Takes awhile for each OEM to add in their stuff.:(
I'm thinking Dell will offer 2005 for the Dell X50v. Why? It is the only device with the 2700g. This will not be fully realized until 2005 comes out. It has 128 MB ROM. If the rumors are true on memory handling with 2005 then the X50v is set up perfectly.
However, I'd have to disagree. I beleive an upgrade will be offered for these reasons:
The Dell X50v isn't even in the same boat as the X3/X5 was, or even the x30, because it is a step into the future. That's what Dell intended it as.
1. It isn't near the end of its life.
2. It has a ton of potential that the other models (x3, x5) simply didn't have (even Dell wouldn't want that GFX processor to go to waste, or the VGA screens they flaunt, and the processor isn't going away for a while)
3. The upgrade isn't as useless as the WM2003SE upgrade. It would have been costly, programs wouldn't support it, it offered almost no functionality improvement, etc. The new upgrade offers functionality that Dell wouldn't have its ULTIMATE axim miss out on. :-)
Well, in retrospect... maybe you were right after all. Maybe they'll just put it in new X50v units. However, X50v and WM2005 simply have to go together.
And why can't PDA owners get updates from Microsoft directly? What happened to the age of "smart installations?"

Because it's a Windows Embedded OS, not designed to update on the fly, like the standard Windows OS's. Has to be custom tailored to each individual device, doesn't have plug and play.
That's what I've been preaching for some time, now. And, if some threads I've seen elsewhere are an indication, Microsoft may finally be getting the message. Stop wasting time on the middleman (pronounced "OEM") and lay down the law: conform to the following hardware specs or no OS. Any OEM-specific features need to be added so that the only thing required is an app or driver. That way, we would be able to purchase the OS upgrade if our hardware has the capacity and features. Microsoft has NEVER so completely rewritten their software to the point that it wouldn't run on previous generation devices. But it has to start with them telling all OEMs to standardize their core, just like the desktops do, and add drivers for other things. Right now, though, that can't happen because what MS sends to the OEMs gets modified and specialized quite a bit before we see it. That's why it's such a mess for upgrades. I don't know how many people whined when the WM2k3 upgrade came out because it didn't this or did that. And some even loaded back to PPC2k2. So why would Dell or anyone else go through the wrestling match customizing an upgrade that would have puny sales and all that grief? Mind you, I was VERY happy with the upgrade and I would have loved to have purchased an upgrade to WM2k3se---which was hardly a revolutionary jump, but did they produce the upgrade? NO---however, by that time Dell had decided upgrades weren't worth the design hassle vs. profit. I'm betting the X50v owners are going to be crying the same blues we did. And even if they don't, at this point it wouldn't be worth it to upgrade when the better machines will be coming out with WM2k5 on them already. I'm hoping in 2006 Microsoft will put the OEMs to the much-needed thumbscrews and get them in line. I'm tired of being held hostage.
....Dell and the other OEMs got to the point of "why spend all this time trying to get the new OS to load over the old one, and have people complain the upgrade trashed their devices or was buggy or whatever". You had a number of them who COULD have upgraded (i.e., to WM2k3 from PPC2k2) who didn't because they were skeptical or whatever. So, lost potential revenue there. If there are enough people who feel the way you do about not jumping onto the new OS, then why bother with an upgrade. So, that's why I'm saying we won't be seeing WM2k5 on anything other than new machines. I'd like to be wrong, if only for you X50v owners out there, since none of the rest of us have any chance at upgrades (THAT I can promise you). I'm certain I'm correct, though.
ture the X30 didnt get the upgrade to 2003SE but compaired to the X50v it doesnt really need it to see its full potential. Dell had better release an update to 2005 for the X50v since it has hardware that is crippled by the limitations of 2003SE. Not many devices have been built surpassing the OS untill this x50v was made. Lets all pray that the release the update since it will bring out the full potential of the x50v that cant be shown with the present os.

X50v WM5 Unofficial A03 (WM5 AUK 3.5.2)
PPC6700 WM5 AUK 3.5.2
Because it might not be compatible with current devices in the first place and they really don't want to have to deal with the extra tech support.
First of all, that's a lot of BS there. Any device capable of running WM2003 can run WM2003SE (ask Microsoft). Dell is just plain cheap (think MC=MR if you anything about economics bfore)

How IGNORANT are you? Do you even read the news, let alone know anything? Dell brought back their support services to the US for you lot of American consumers. And I'm sure your accent is far less comprehensible (not to mention outrageously gaudy) than that of an Indian's considering where you're from.
