Now I think to myself "hey, I'm willing to bet that there's at least some rudimentary support in there for my Axim, and I can probably just reflash it back to 2003SE if it buys the farm." Well to my surprise and edification, there's support in there for a bunch of platforms, including ARM41, which IIRC is what's on the 3835.
So I'm currently downloading and installing (it's a live installer) CE 5.0 aka Magneto aka Windows Mobile 2005. If all goes well it'll be on my h3835 and Axim x50v before I send it out to get the screen fixed, if only to screw with the techs at pocketpcrepair.com.
umm, isn't windows CE 5.0 a windows mobile builder. so like if you want to build a embedded OS you can use it to create one? i was looking at it and it looks like the same thing as windows CE 4.0 which is a program that lets you build embedded software.

Windows CE Builder (which is what you described) is a Microsoft product, but trust me it is NOT free to download. This looks to be a legit CE 5.0 eval version.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean it's Windows Mobile 2005. Windows CE is just the backend OS behind the Windows Mobile (aka PocketPC) frontends.

I got windows CE builder through my school program, i'm an engineering student at Syracuse University. Also, it is similar in size and they give alot of their mobile stuff away for free.

another reason i don't think its windows mobile 2005.
No, it's not free. It's an eval. If this works, it will most likely only work for 120 days.
I'm not sure if this is going to end up with the Magneto UI and utils. I believe there's an emulator in there, so I'll give that a shot first. If that doesn't do the trick, I'll try booting off of a usb key.
I went out last night while the installer was running and my connection dropped briefly (toad hummer's having issues in my area right now), so the installer paused. It's continuing now (it's about a 2GB live install).
Sho' Nuff ... What I downloaded was for the CE 5.0 backend. There are a couple of apps, but no today screen, and no new UI. Still morbidly interested in installing it on my iPaq tho' (not gonna put it on the Axim). The interface is basically the same one from WinCE 2.0.
That is incredible. Looking at your screen shots, I feel like I'm looking back in time!
I don't know how many of you used to own a device with CE, but I thought that it was gone. I know some businesses still use CE on small Internet Terminals that they use, like my local hospital. I don't think this would work on my old clamshell Journada, though.
