He-he-he... I can't upgrade since I'm still running an X5. I'm going to have to wait until a new PDA comes out that has what I want... at least 128 MB RAM and battery life as good as my X5.
WM5 definitely sounds like a worthwhile upgrade, though.
I believe in that "if it's not broke, don't fix it" saying,
x50v is good enough as it is now, so I'll just wait until upgrading to my next device to see how WM5 is, maybe on the x55v? or x60v? hehe
For all those hoping for it to be free, I wouldn't get your hopes up. Think of Windows OS on your PC. Say you bought a computer with Windows 2000 on it. Alright, now XP came out. Does the manufacturer (or Microsoft) give you a free upgrade? Nope.... they charge $100+ just for an upgrade version.
Same applies to a PocketPC OS. Microsoft sells the OS to the various manufacturers, then the manufacturers make a build of it with the drivers needed for their devices and some custom installed apps, and sell it to you generally at a break-free price. In the past, PPC upgrades have been around $30, which is much better than the $100+ that a desktop OS upgrade will run ya....

I thoguht it was confirmed that it WASN'T going to be free! Didn't Bill say that???
Anyway, I voted maybe, I will upgrade if:
-Battery life is really better
-Responsiveness of device increases a bit
-There will be more freedom in customizing the device (looks, etc...)
-The price is reasonable

Bill doesn't have control over that. Pricing is up to the OEMs.
I'm betting around $30. I will upgrade just as soon as it is available. I love to be on the bleeding edge. :)
I plan on upgrading.. just a few weeks after you do. I prefer someone else to do my bleeding for me :)

Give it a new name, a new number, put a .5 on the end of it, I don't care..heck tell me I will lose all of my data, that I will need to reinstall everything I have ever installed...tell me that none of my existing stuff will work anymore...tell me that I will need to pay through the nose...it doesn't matter...until Dell puts out a phone, I am stuck with the x50v...and will continue to use it as best I can...loading up everything I can find to see if it makes me like it any more...the x50v is the best handheld ever made, to date...and deserves to be upgraded...free, yeah that would be cool...is it going to happen, probably not, but who cares? I'll shell out up to fifty bucks for it...hell, my last game cost me twenty...it's a no brainer.

Like any other new release, I'll want to see what it offers, whether it will be better for me, and my pda (which I'm assuming will still be my x50v at that time).
And, like any other new release, I'll expect to pay for it, albeit an upgrade price, not full price.
The two features that I'm aching for that I'm surprised everyone seems to be forgetting is the whole Ram usage situation and permanent storage thing. The ram situation change is AWESOME for me because right now I have a constant 16MB or less program ram free. After the upgrade that skyrockets to pretty much a constant 58MB or more. Win. Permanent storage, no matter if you run out of battery, no data loss. Backup battery be damned... Sweet. One more thing, our (x50v owners) 2700g chips will really start to come into their own with the new direct x upgrade. They already rock for video, now they will start to speed up the entire interface. Homerun. I'm upgrading as soon as I possibly can. When people say that they are waiting for a MAJOR upgrade to the operating system, what in the hell are you waiting for...? (and i'm talking operating system, not intergrated software. there's always 3rd party software for that, a lot of the time it's free...).
Free? MUHAHA. Its a Microsoft Product were talking about. Wat was the last FREE mircosoft Product you've seen? Was an Upgrad to MS XP Free? Was even the Upgrade to Win 98 SE free? Free MS software.
Breaking news:
+++++++MS decided to Publish Windows Longhorn under GPL++++++++
Last week I ebay'd my X50v and it went for just a few dollars less than the original purchase price. The news of an upcoming release of Windows Mobile 5.0 prompted the decision to sell, but also I'd never been happy with the Axim X50v's lesser battery life.
My trusty old X5 (PPC 2002) will see me through however long it takes for new Axim X50vs to appear with Windows Mobile 5.0, but even then I'd only buy one if the battery life is greatly improved.
