no wifi sync is a backwards step.
we will see a 3rd party solution offered. it will cost money.
that is the MS way.
enhance the 3rd party marketplace by providing "built-in" features that really don't work, to create a marketplace around their products.
so the real question is not, 3.8, but how much will wifi sync support cost?

Agreed, a step back in functionality, but in MS's eyes, as step forward in customer security. This most definitely creates an opportunity for a 3rd party vendor to develop and market such a utility.

According to Brighthand, it's been resolved.

Even if Bluetooth is faster, it's no substitute for Wifi - you still have to be standing pretty much next to the PC for Bluetooth to work - may as well put it in the cradle!
MS aren't dropping wifi synch support for security reasons. They are doing it so that business' will buy their "Enterprise software," which will allow it. We've been here before with Schedule+. This all stinks.

Deleting it was probably demanded by the cellphone carriers so smartphone users could not wifi sync with "any" computer they came within range of, for security reasons, but also probably to protect what the carriers see as their revenue stream - ringtones, games, photo transmission, and soon, music downloads.
MS had to make this new OS palatable to the phone companies! PDA users are a small minority compared with that market.

Personally I only "sync" contacts and calendar which takes mere seconds through a cradle.
If I want to move files I simply copy them wirelessly using Resco File Explorer.
Looks like I won't be inconvenienced in the slightest.

MS is only creating another reason to make people go bluetooth.
It is still a "secure" connection and IMO is just another way to get people to buy all of those bluetooth mouse and keyboards that they are not selling!

I WILL NOT be upgrading if Wifi/Network ActiveSync is not available. I use it all the time and practically never sync via USB.
I sell the HP units where I work and one of the major things that drives people towards these is the ability to Sync remotely with their desktop computer at work from Anywhere. Imagine having to BE in the office to get your updated Schedule when you are a "road warrior"? or Imagine an Office of 2 or 3 people having to Shell out a few grand to pick up an Exchange Server just so one person can have remote sync capability.
What are microsoft's reasons? Who knows. Someone Mentiond Phone Carriers... Doubtful. Smartphones are such a small part of the Windows Mobile Grouping. Picture Messaging is much more of a strain on Bandwidth than Activesync. Plus how many people are going to Activesync 10 times a day over a cell phone connection? Could Microsoft's Reason be security? That in itself is a load of crap. Microsoft has VPN capability in the handheld and it is readily available for anyone to use. Setup a VPN to your office network with a $100 Linksys Router and everyone can Sync with their own work PC's from Anywhere. If they have XP Pro, the Incoming VPN Capability is already built in so no need for a VPN router at all. If People CHOOSE not to use a VPN, then Fine. Those are the same people who CHOOSE not to wear a Seatbelt. Security CAN'T be a REAL reason. Maybe a Marketing Reason or their "Official Reason", But not a REAL reason. My Axim enables a VPN automatically every time I activesync wirelessly. If a VPN isn't secure enough for Microsoft, then they have bigger problems with Security than Activesync. Better Idea, lets get rid of Activesync, or Wireless, or Windows Mobile, or computers..... Lets get rid of everything so we are so secure that we can't do anything at all.

I believe security is the reason. Lets see, I can
A. Buy a VPN router for $100 or
B. Not buy a VPN router and just wirelessly sync via plan old wifi.
What option would most people choose? Hummmmm $100. See what I am getting at? Most people follow the money every time.
With all the flak MS has been taking over security lately I can hardly blame them. Look how many people were running PC's without a firewall before the free one that MS included with SP2. Even though you could download one free firewall before SP2.
Look how many people run their wifi's wide open without WEP WPA. One can say that "that's their problem not mine", then consider how worm viruses that spread from unprotected PC to unprotected PC and slowed down the net for all of us. You might want to reconsider. Is wifi Activesync capable of spreading a virus or worm through an unsecured wifi syncing? I am not a security expert so I can say it defintely can or cant.. but the poker player in me says yes.
They are really in a no-win situation... so given that, I think they went with making AS more secure.
