Wifi ActiveSync gone with WinMobile 2005

Will you upgrade to Magneto knowing that you'll never ActiveSync your Axim over wifi?

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/foru...ic.php?t=39975

I'm voting no - I'm not going to pay $20+ to go back to the USB cradle. Same with Bluetooth, I'm not happy with the speeds and I frequently copy 500ish meg of audio/video over to my SD card.

it all depends on how you perceive this feature,

after all wifi is so unprotected, maybe doing sync trough

usb is a security feature. that way M$ washes their hands

from the total lack of said security, related to wifi .

I use it a lot - my cradle isn't even in the same room as the PC.

The only time I've connected the cradle via USB was to do the A03 upgrade.

I interpreted remote sycning to mean over the internet, meaning you could still sync using wifi on you lan/wlan. I may be wrong though?

They've removed the capability to sync via an IP Connection. Whether it's Wifi, wired Ethernet or whatever.

I'm not sure I buy the security argument if they're pointing the finger at Wifi as the weakest link. Sure it CAN be setup badly (and often is) but saying "Wifi is insecure" is like saying that "guns kill people". There's a little more involved.

Either way - looks like a dumb idea to me. Very, very dumb.

Utterly rediculous! Maybe they are trying to beef up their motherboard business? Really though, I use this feature all the time so I don't have to be sitting at the PC to sync, install programs, etc. this doesn't make sense.

Where did you get the information that it was removed? I remember seeing something that it was not present in the LEAKED BETA build of active sync 4 Maby we should all wait until it is actually released before concluding that it will be absent. I do remember seeing something about being able to sync over BlueTooth in a new artical about Active sync 4, so That makes be doubt that Syncing over IP option being removed is just an assumption. I think it makes more sence that the option to enabke it was removed from activesync because it is now enabled by default. Again, I could be wrong, but I don't like jumping to conclusions too quickly.

I'm not fussed with upgrading anyway, but this is a big negative for me. To not be able to sync via wifi (especially when you sync to more than one computer and you've only got one cradle, or if you're in one room of your house working and your computer is idling in your office upstairs, etc) would remove one of the principle uses for my Axim at the moment.

A ridiculous idea. Why don't they just get rid of wifi support altogether? Surely that's more secure...!

From the WM2005 fact sheet:

· ActiveSync® 4.0 support. Windows Mobile 5.0 offers users new features such as the ability to sync pictures in contacts and wirelessly sync over Bluetooth®, as well as an improved partnership wizard and an improved overall synchronization experience.

My take is Wifi is out but Bluetooth is in.

I think it is in how you interprate that message. So we will probably have to wait until it comes out. I just can't see them doing away with wifi sync. that sentence says "offers new features" but not that anything else is going away.

It says Blue tooth is a NEW feature, Nothing in there says the Wireless sync is going away.

I don't think THAT particular quote is the origin of the claim that Wifi sync is gone. If you look around for other posts (here and other sites) about Wifi with AS 4 you'll see similar comments.

Plus Jason Dunn over at PPCThoughts stated that the MVPs had rallied against it, but MS had gone ahead and removed it anyway. He's not known, as far as I'm aware, for stating falsehoods.
