Question Can you preorder yet?

Can you preorder the upgrade from Dell yet? I thought I remember seeing that you could but I cannot find a link.

Don't think so. But if you buy a new X50 from Dell USA they will send you the upgrade when it's available
This week I have been mostly listening to..... Short cummings audio

This isn't really on the subject, but how are Dell planning to do ROM updates after the initial release of WM5? They'll have to have some way to verify that you bought it, otherwise anyone could download WM5 A02 or whatnot and suddenly have a WM5 upgrade for free. Just curious.

My guess is a WM5 A02 will only work on a WM5 device. Much like you can't but a A04 English Rom on a different Axim.

But the x50 is a WM2003 device and will soon be a WM5 device, so there won't be any hardware stopping you. I thought that the ROM updates were a complete image of all the OS files, updated or not.

my guess is that something will be set when you use the purchased update that the ROM updates will look for. some flag that won't let it work unless you already used the cd to upgrade. shouldn't be too hard for them to figure that one out.

Usually the upgrade apps that they use to flash the ROM's specify what you have currently loaded and what you are about to load up. I'm guessing that what they'd do is if ROM = 2003, they won't allow the WM05 flash to be applied. This could be easily circumvented by someone dedicated enough to crack the programming...but then again..thats the case with any piece of software. That's probably what they'd do though.

I hadn't thought about using the software flag, should've been obvious. That answers my question though. I'm such an upgrade freak that Dell probably won't be able to take my money fast enough for the upgrade .

They could easily base it on your service tag. That is tied to the purchaser and all the information from your order.

Me too. I will miss the wifi syncs but I guess I can use bluetooth or IR for that so it won't be that bad. Hopefully they will figure out a way around that and put the function back in.
