Question Why do we have to wait?

Hey everyone,

I don't know if this has been brought up or not, but I was wondering, why we have to wait with Dell when it comes to WM5? I know we could buy it now(I think)or at least it is out for other devices. I got my axim with the free upgrade and I have to wait til Oct. Is it a Dell thing in general or is this typical of upgrades? I was reading the new Pocket PC mag and I am looking foward to some of the new features. Maybe I am just inpatient.....

What other device has it shipped for??? (Hacked devices with leaked code don't count)

My bad, I was refering to some of the pics I was looking at in the mag so I am not sure of any specific devices, but if I got this wrong I stand corrected. More specifically has WM5 been released and if so what's up with the wait time for the upgrade? Does this have to do with manufacturing, shipping, standard industry practices or Dell holding the proverbial carrot on the string?

No it has not been released yet. It should be out sometime in October. That is why you have to wait.

The copies that magazines/developers/etc get this early are generally just "test" (i.e. beta) releases of the OS build for a specific model. Microsoft released the core WM5 OS a while back. But each manufacturer has to take that core OS and make a custom build that works on their PPCs.

More than likely Dell, HP, and others already have a "test" build of it for their devices in-house... but they don't release it until they've worked the kinks out. Plus you've got to add in the lead-time for stamping the CDs, printing the instructions, packaging, etc.

c'mmon guys - the wait for those with Japanese-language devices would be much longer...

note in case, when the x50v first came out, it was around a quarter before in even came to japan... so much so that i was tempted to get the Japanese-version hx4700 (or at least travel back to LA, and order from Dell-USA)
