After reading about the probability of some software incompatibilties and inherent bugs within the new WM5 OS, is it possible to revert back to WM2003? I'm running WM2003 2nd Edition with ROM A03 and have never found a need to do an update. The companion disc I received with my Axim X50v does not seem to carry an OS recovery file. Does each ROM update carry the entire OS along with whatever bugs Microsoft supposedly fixed?
The reason I ask is when I receive my WM5 disc in October, if I find that it's more trouble than it's worth, I'd like to be able to go back to using my current OS that's worked (so far) quite well.
So far, all Dell updates have made a backup of the previous ROM before updating, so you can revert back to the previous ROM if you wish. I don't know if that will be the case with WM5, but there's a good chance it will.

Also - I believe if you just keep a copy of A03 archived somewhere then you'll just be able to reload it. These updates completely replace the ROM image on the machine so you should have no problem re-initializing your machine to any ROM level you want - assuming the hardware configuration of the 51v is compatible with the earlier ROM image. That would be the thing to check. It probably is - but make sure of that. Still ... the A03 (or any other ROM loader) is probably going to validate the hardware before it tries to boostrap anyway so it's unlikely you'll ever be "stuck", really just as long as your system can communicate with the device physically.
the only problem you might have is that it will more than likly not let you Downgrade as far as the software goes, even the rom updates wont let you downgrade unless you made a back up to your pc before (wierd, but thats how it works with rom updates)
Thanks for the quick responses and great advice! :approve: The more I visit this board, the more I realize how invaluable it is! Plus, it's starting to get a bit addicting.
Now that I know that each ROM update carries its own OS, I'll make sure that I archive a copy of my ROM version before updating to WM5.
There should be some guidence with the upgrade.. but as dell haven't released it yet we don't know what it is :rolling:
I think the tension is starting to get to me
