I'm getting the free WM5 CD, but I'm going to hold off on upgrading.
I'm afraid some of my rare apps (Japanese translators, tube, metro, etc..) won't work.
Also, I want all the people here to filter through the bugs. ;)
I am still considering whether to go for the X50v, X51v or Hx4700. Anyway, I would prefer the X51v specially with the 256MB or ROM and WM5.
The reviews I read were ok but when I saw the benchmarks about WM5.0 performance, yuk! slow!!!! awefully slow! I mean a turtle would figure out the theory or relativity faster than an X5* running WM5.0 !!!! Makes me seriously ponder whether migrating to WM5 is actually something one really wants to do. I mean, suddenly your everything will take much much longer to startup/load and save.
Additionally, another point of concern, specially for those upgrading to WM5 would be that as of WM5 your program and data will be saved to ROM. On an X51V you got double (256MB) but if you are upgrading your X50 you will have to do with half of that for your applications and data (unless I get something wrong). And on WM5.0 you do NOT have the option to have it behave as PC Mobile 2003 (save & install to RAM). So with an X50 you got the short end of the stick with less memory to hold your things.
These are basically my concerns so far that have made me reconsider my choices... Tough one... slow with persistent storage or faster with less memory?

i've seen quite a few threads on how a lot of programs don't work well with WM5. i'll probably upgrade though because of the new versions of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

Ever try Textmaker? It's far superior in every way to Mobile word.

Yes it is true that the x51v does ave more ROM space which is a big deal concidering WM5 instals programs into ROM and runs programs with RAM. The x50v however still has 128MB and all of us wm 2003 users have become very familiar with using only 64MB of storage space for programs because 2003 installed programs into and ran programs from RAM. So WM5 will still give x50v users twice the memory upgrade. Also, with WM5 the ROM is the default application directory so I believe that you can still choose to install prgrams on SD and CF cards if you would like to save storage space.
There are downsides however. ROM is slower than RAM. WM5 saves information in a different more efficient format to try and make up for this difference however still falls short in read and write speeds. This is why as I am sure you have read in other posts x50v devices perform faster than x51v. Another downside is that the ROM memory in our Axim PDA's is flash memory not a microdrive disk. Flash memory has a life expectancy from 150,000 writes to 350,000. Do not wory too much however because one must rember that the RAM in WM5 runs the programs so, for example, if you are using Pocket IE the Temporary internet files wil be saved to RAM not ROM. this will drag the life o your device to 5 years as a moderate to heavy user (5 years is minimum statistic considering daily installs and uninstalls). In 5 years I am sure we will all have new Axim's anyway.
As it looks right now, WM has a few compatibility bugs to work out that, I would hope, dell will offer solutions to with BIOS upgrades, and is somewhat slow compared to the speeds that a wm 2003 user acustomed to. This however is small beans compared to the new userfriendly interfaces and programability of WM5.
My WM5 upgrade CD is on order so I will be able to check for myself if WM5 provides me with any benefits over 2k3se or not. I don't trust any review(er)s on this. If WM5 confirms my scepticism I will have an easy way to restore WM2K3SE, apps, and data.
Office Mobile apps don't matter to me because I use TextMaker, PlanMaker, ClearVue Presentation. The only way WM5 can beat WM2K3SE in my book is through faster response and redrawing speeds as well as more available RAM. Since almost all of my apps are already installed in BIS the comparison should favor WM5. Well I suspect both claims may be myths... but defer judgement until I have checked it out myself, in a month or so.

Hi there Sev!
I haven't seen anything that particularly excites me in WM5 to be honest, and it appears to do nothing to fix the few niggles I currently have with 2000SE. I'm mildly interested in the 'extra' battery life, so I reckon I 'll just play it by ear for now.
