Problem with gwes.exe on Axim x51v

I upgraded from an x5 to an x51v last week but I keep having a problem with my new Axim. I get a message that says "A problem has occurred with gwes.exe" and the system wants to send off a Windows trouble report. Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me??

I ignored the issue at first but it seems to keep happening so I'm starting to take note of when it happens. The last time it occurred when I closed Excel. I exited Excel via OmegaOne's BatteryBar task switcher. Not positive of when it happened the other times but it has happened at least 5-6 times so far.

This is what I have installed on my x51v:
Omega One battery pack Pro
Aspyr Media Enigmo
Fathammer Stuntcar Extreme
IonFx GeoRally
Fathammer Toy Golf
Two Peaks Flexwallet 2005
GEO's GPXSonar
Omega One Journal Bar

All of these apps are newly downloaded, latest version. The OmegaOne products specifically state they work with WM5. Most of the others came from Dell (except GPXSonar and Flexwallet).

Any info to help me solve my problem would be greatly appreciated.

Try a different task switcher and see what happens.

I assume this is completely unrelated but I have run into another issue with the same device. Here's the scenario. Everything is working fine (no recent gwes crash or anything).... Power the device off normally by hitting the button. Go back to the device some time later. Device will not turn on. Only way I can get device back on is to remove and then re-insert battery. This has happened three times so far. Again, I assume this is unrelated but I really don't know.

Oh, and for trying another task switcher, I will. However, there is at least one time that the gwes error came up that I am positive the task switcher was not being used. The very first day I got the Axim, I installed the racing game. The first time I ran it I got a low memory notification (From OmegaOne's battery pack pro I believe as it watches memory too) and the game generally crashed. At this point I got the gwes error. That was the first time for the error and I didn't think much of it as I assumed it was an 'out of memory' problem. I did have some other applications open at the time and assume that is why the memory ran out. I have since run the racing program without problems, after I ensured nothing else was being run at the time.

Did you get to the bottom of this? I have had the same error twice today.

I only have Dell stuff installed so far. It happened to me when turning on the unit again after I had turned it off whilst playing Toy Golf and then just randomly when the unit was next to me on my desk.

Start from Scratch to properly diagnose why its happening.
1. backup your contacts, appointments and tasks
2. hard reset
3. restore contact appts and tasks
4. use device for a couple of days to confirm that error is not happening
(if it is , it may be a dell support call needed)
5. install 1 app. and use for a couple of days.
if error free install another app.
6. When you get the error, mark down the last app installed, go to step 1 but make sure the first app installed is the one you marked down.
( this is to see if error was caused by that app or a combination of apps)

This is what i'd do.

Issue 1: gwes...

This is NOT a plug for tweaks2k2...however the developer did discover a bug related to microsoft security and 'signed' software.

If you do a search you can probably find a thread or two on it here, not sure where I originally read about it.

Anyway, I was getting this error too, and after running tweaks2k2 and disabling this feature (according to a couple of things I've read, can't speak to it personally, the x51v is the first wm5 device to have this turned on by default) the error went away.

There may be another way to disable this besides buying/running tweaks2k2. It worked for me.

Second issue - not turning on / WSOD...

I've had this issue too. In my case, I didn't have to remove the battery, a soft reset got my axim back up and running again. At it's worst, I was doing 8-10 soft resets a day...

Current speculation is that there are two main causes (there may be others!!) -- One is powering down with WIFI enabled. The second cause is powering down / powering up with an SD card inserted. Noone will say whether this is a Dell or an MS problem, but I'm sure a ROM upgrade in the future will address...

For now, I only insert my SD card when I need it, and I'm turning off WIFI when I'm done. Haven't had to reset in 5 days?!?!

Hope this helps!!!

Because of the powering problem I returned the device to Dell and was sent a new one. The gwes issue has come up once or twice time but not nearly the frequency of the first device. Not sure if anything has changed or just my habits with the device.

After about 2 weeks of no problems with powering the device on, the same exact problem started to occur. After reading other threads in the forums I removed my SD card and for the last 24 hours I have not had to remove battery (soft reset does work too, so I actually do that now). I haven't tried the registry hack posted in one of threads that should fix the issue -- simply have left the SD card out for now. Prior to the last 24 hours I was having to reset the device every single power off that lasted more than a couple of minutes. Haven't had to since so I'm assuming the problem is found. However, I'm giving it a bit more time before I'm confident in the solution.

Personally I've never turned the device off with WIFI on so that is not what has been causing my issues. SD card is always in though and currently appears to be the culprit. Now I'm leaving the SD card out unless needed.

I called Dell....

Well I am glad I found this thread, because this problem was driving me nuts. Dell was no help at all, (in fact they said they had no knowledge of this issue, even though ggilmam said he got a replacement) they just made me do a hard reset, so now I am going to let the machine sit for 24 hours and slowly add programs. I only added two programs and they were:

Resco picture viewer
Geo Rally 3D game
Both of these items came off of the Dell CD and they were free.

I also has a SD card installed, so I had all the issues you guys have been talking about.

I also tried to install Extended systems XTNDconnect version 5. unfortunatly this would not install and in fact I got a failure notice. I thought that was the root of my problem, but now I know it was not. It turns out that it is not copatable with WM5.

As a side question (and note), I am confused about how to decide which programs I can install on this new X51V. I had a number of programs I loved for my old Axim X5, but it now seems that I may not be able to use them, and I think that a lot of these programs will not be upgraded to work with WM5, due to the reduced interest in pocket pc's. I contacted Handango and sugggested they make a section or sort by field for WM5, but we will have to see.

I will post more as I start reinstalling stuff.

I frequently use a program exhibiting this issue on X51v's and the author suggested that if you switch off error-reporting the problem may go away. Someone posted back that it did indeed work. I don't remember how it's done though, it's somewhere in the settings, no third party utilities required.

I tried that, but it did not work. Although it did not report errors any more, it still froze up and was extremely slow.

I got this error only when running YanCEyWare (a scripture eBook reader). The maker of the program suggested switching-off Error Reporting in the Settings menu. That worked and I no longer get the error. I can use the program now without any problems.

gwes.exe and Dell backup soft.

Hi, I also have the gwes.exe error on my new X51v (french ROM).
I've installed :

- Toy Golf (on Dell cd)
- eRally (on Dell cd)
- Tomtom Navigator 5.1
- Skype for PPC

I've hard reset and install all applications than I've made a backup with the Dell software on my SD Card.
When I try to restore from the backup I've often the gwes.exe error ! Seems that the backup program is not working very well

Also with the Dell backup program, if you change the Menu settings (ex : disable Help)and then bakcup and restore, the settings are not restored correctly...

I've gotten this error frequently using Mobipocket reader 4.9 on ym X50v with WM5.

I disabled error reporting and the error popupes went away, but Mobipocket continued to freeze (the PDA itself was fine, but Mobipocket was frozen and the task had to be ended and restarted).

I've done away with Mobipocket and seem to be fine for now.

I got this error message a couple of times after freshly installing WM5 on my X50v. Hasn't occured since, but I've been having strange problems where the device won't turn on and I have to do a soft reset.
