Basically it returns the unit to factory defaults. It erases everything from memory.

Had to reset my X51V last night. messed up the ozvga settings and soft resets didnt get it running. It did get me back to factory defaults

Howto - Hold down power button and press soft reset button for 2 seconds

Just wondering, if it doesn't touch BIS, wouldn't your OS and registry files be intact?

I had the same question about hard reset w/ Windows Mobile 5. How do I get my Axim to look like the day I bought it (in terms of files on the Axim) so that it's clean and fresh because I've installed too many trialware.

I hard reset my x51v and it cleared all user loaded ROM and brought it back to the condition I recieved it from the factory in.

That's good news. It gives us an "out" if we install a program that screws something up.

I have done a hardreset and everything was like at the beginning.
A hardresets clears ALL memory (except the ROM with the OS)

Ive done 3 hard resets now in my quest to convert from my wm2003 ipaq 5455 to my 3 day old axim x51v. Each time it came back to the factory fresh condition that I recieved it in.

Im Not sure either how its doing it either (I mean I know how the resets are happening as Im initiating them after messing it up with an install of a not compatible app, but Im not sure about how the os gets itself back to factory fresh)..
