Let's say I had a dream today. WM6 magically installed itself on someone's fictitious Axim x51v. The completely legal dream I had resulted in the fastest, smoothest Axim anyone can possibly dream of. I'm still in shock at the (totally made up, bogus, unreal) performance. This is the Axim I've always wanted (dreampt of wanting...).
This thread title is great. Reminds me of Bill Gates famous "No one will use more than 640k of RAM!" line.
Dell doesn't care enough to make a WM6 upgrade, they don't even care to make a WM5 one with recent AKU. I don't think they would care about anyone releasing a custom rom as long as they don't ask Dell for support on this non-Dell rom.
But I think there should be a choice. People are complaining about China barring specific search result and sites, but is this much better?
I am not saying there is any A01 WM6 Rom made by our russian best friend "Football", that is running smoth like it should and has no problem whatever.
Aximsite is the biggest Site for Aximusers. I think this should be Europe, or at least the US, but not China.
All those people that are waiting for WM6 should be able to run it if it is available for their x51v Axim. If it crashes their system, burns down their house or whatever it would be their bad.
But providing an imaginary russian guy would give us the pleasure of WM6 on our x51vs it would be as good, no even better than anything Dell came up with and the community of all the "oh so bad hackers" would provide for any kind of bugfix like already shown in the imaginary updated WM5 Rom this russian dude would have created.
Nonetheless people can still enter keywords for finding "WM6" for "x51v" on any searchengine I guess...
Dell may not care, but Microsoft does....and that is a big deal.

Isn't one of the biggest reasons, to protect inexperienced users from inadvertantly bricking their axes. Besides the legal problems which are probably the primary reason for the ban, there are more and more support requests for help to restore original Roms. The Rom flashing procedure is a little bit advanced for the average user, the person that sees a new update talked about at a site like this and finds it and tries to update to it and ends up with a device that doesn't work.
Can people stop whingeing about Dell support, there was a definitive press release about Dell support earlier in the year and with that the realisation that no WM6 from Dell would be available.

That is also a big problem with these types of ROMs. There is no real support and the updates do not appear to be tested so rigorously. When flashing any type of ROM, hacked, illegal or even supported ones, there is always the chance that something will go wrong. With these unsupported ROMs, there is no recourse if anything goes wrong...truly unfortunate for users who naively pursue these types of ROMs.

If you read the posts at xda developers, start at page 18, we have yet to see a bricked axim because of this upgrade. Heck, history has it that Dell's a12 rom upgrade utility has a higher incidence of bricked axims with it's hard reset problem, of course relative to the first few days that both roms were released. Furthermore, members over there reported re-flashing back to a17 or even a12 without problems. That's something you can't do with a12.
If you're running the new ROM on both your ax's and using it daily, then instead of arguing here what's best, reveiw it and post a reveiw that decisevely changes our minds in regards to the ROM upgrades. You know why I'm not playing with it

You know what is pretty funny, these ROM's are probably tested even more than Dell's ROM's. :D

I agree... ALL the conversation should ONLY happen on forums where it IS NOT against the rules...
Why such disdain for those that choose to use Wm6? Banning, censoring, and acting holier than thou towards WM6/Axim users will serve only to (eventually) anger a large part of the Axim community who will undoubtedly begin to migrate to where the grass is greener. I can understand keeping illegal discussions off this forum (download locations and possibly even step by step installation instructions), but denial that WM6 is available for x50v, and x51v, and banning all WM6 talk is just silly.
Do not looketh behind this wall... nothing exists behind the wall... even if something did exist, it'll surely break your Axim and get you thrown in jail...

Totally agreed with that. I don't come to aximsite as much as i used to because of this topic, I find myself browsing at other forums most of the time, but can't deny i felt at home here in Aximsite.
I know (as everybody else and their grandmother), that reproducing copyrighted software is illegal, but as long as we only discuss about what is going on with the work of others without providing the programs for download, we're in the safe line. This is as forbidding to talk about a serial killer 'casue what he did was illegal...
I have no idea where that came from... At no time have I denied that... look through my last posts and you'll see that clearly.

There is no disdain here. We are simply enforcing a policy. Our goal is to avoid risk and preserve the forum for all users. This forum offers so much more than support for hacked and illegal ROMs.
I, personally, judge no-one for what they decide to do with their pocket pcs, but I do enforce forum policy. My enforcement of forum policy should never be taken personally. I just wish everyone would settle down about this issue, so I could spend more time doing what I enjoy doing....helping other users out with their pocket pcs.
