So, What's the bottom line?

Does WM6 work with Axim x51v or not?

I don't care about the free/paid/no upgrade from Dell. I never expected to hear anything from Dell as soon as I gave my credit card number to them.

I don't understand this whole ROM sh*t and don't want to. All I want to know is, "Does WM6 work with Axim?" If it does, I'll go buy WM6.

Z.

There is no such thing as a generic ROM for Windows Mobile. This means that any WM6 upgrade that will work with your X51v needs to be written FOR your X51v. Basically, you risk bricking your device if you try one written for a different device.

Without it being released by Dell WM6 will not work with the X51.

Windows mobile cannot just be bought off the shelf in the same way that Vista can, it has to be customised for each device by the manufacturer. You may be able to find WM6 ROMs but there is no guaruntee at all that they will work unless they were taken from an identical device, a lot of functionality could be missing and you risk turning an X51 into a paperweight.

Basically like others have said you cannot just go and buy it. WM6 is just an OS but you need the drivers for an OS for it to run if it didnt have the drivers it wouldnt run or wouldnt run very well the same with WM6. Desktop operating systems are huge like 4gb for vista because hard drives have GBs and GBs of storage windows can put loads of different drivers into the OS so thats why its universal for every computer. WM6 has to be under the amount of the devices ROM memory so microsoft and another PDA/Phone manufacture will put the drivers they want into the OS so that everything works. You try and flash a HTC Universal Rom on an Axim it will either be bricked or run and you dont have any drivers for the CF slot and most probably the wireless and bluetooth.

lol i thought about it and read loads of stuff about WM6 and it anit that great really i just like the nice theme and the bug fixes will make it more stable. I will upgrade if Dell release and update but for the time being i want to keep my CF slot lol as i dont want a CF card that cant be used!

Yeah i know well thats microsoft for you arrg but then look on the bright side if you have a mac all the software, cables etc. are way to expensive (if you forget Vista and Office lol)!

Thats a nice link to an Axim X51. Shiny web page.

The mobile 6 rom hasn't been released. I don't think they've gone public with what handhelds will be using it.:)

Check out this link on mobile 6

Where's the x51 on the page? I don't see one, and I don't see any mention of either 'Dell' or Axim' on that page or the associated links. There are MANY devices announced using WM6 at the moment, including the HTC Universal ROM floating around the net.

"Dell Axim X51v"
The title has "Dell Axim X51v with Windows Mobile 5"

The Operating System category shows: "Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC"

... and if it's showing Windows Mobile 6 STANDARD (the antenna showing signal strength in the upper-right corner as per the shot in the PC Magazine review matches it almost perfectly)... then that's a Smartphone OS, which means some Marketing moron photoshopped it. As you pointed out, the specs do not match the image, which suggest someone decided to make it 'look good'.

In other words, I ain't gonna believe that page means WM6 is already running on a Dell Axim x51v and that they're releasing the ROM soon. Anyone who says, based on that one (obvious) photoshop that it's 'true' needs their head examined. ;)

The one on the microsoft page is some weired mix of smartphone and pocket pc version of WM5!
It has the smartphone app launcher on the top and a small amount of icons on the top bar like smartphones BUT it has the start menu on the top instead of being a softkey, it has Pocket PC Today plugins under the smartphone app launcher, and the task bar is above the softkeys, instead of on the top bar.

Yeah, I agree that it won't work, HOWEVER!

I must say.......... Vista is not 4 GB, lol

Its just over 1 GB. I forgot the size of the ISO of the beta I downloaded, and I don't feel like checking my retail copy, lol.
