no, you cant "hack" the wm6 image to work with the x5XX!! stop startign threads about

you just cant. ok.

alot of the people who start these threads know little more about computers then the fact that you can spam message boards with them.

you cant "hack" the wm6 rom for the axim.

i am a very experienced programmer with more then 12 langs. under my belt. i have extensive experience with embedded computers (ppcs, nas boxes, routers, that sort of thing).

i am currently developing custom firmware for hte hp mediavault (an embedded nas box based off of the broadcom broadnas BCM4785) and i can tell you it is more then a "small favor" to port/recreate an firmware image. i have spent literally hundreds of hours trying to find workarounds for moduals in the soure tree that haven't been gpl'ed (they apper as executables in the tree). and this is talkign about little bits of code here and there that are closed source. the popel who want to mod a wm6 image to work on an x5XX are talking about modding a COMPLETELY closed source image.

so, unless you want to...
+shell out thousands of dollars on a wm6 devel kit
+spend hundreds of hours _trying_ to mod a image to work on a device that wasnt intended to use it
+brick your device a few hundred times over

you aren't going to get anywhere.
and the funny thing is, you wont get anywhere anyway. the x5XX was not intended ot have the wm6 image installed on it in the first place.

im also tired of idoits posting about how it would be "easy" to get a full installation of windows xp to run on the x5XX.

both arent possible.

so, lets recap.

unless you...
+have extensive experience working with the internals of embedded computers
+know at least 12 programming langs
+have developed at least one firmware image

then dont even bother tryign to argue with me.

We even have a PXA270 dev kit knocking around the place that one of them got asteroids running on, but even he would be stumped with all the proprietary hardware in the Axim. As ABF said, you need $$$$ and access to all the hardware info of the device to do it yourself.

Asking the question "Can sum1 hak teh WM6 ROM?!?!" Immediately marks you down as not having any comprehension of what is involved, and it is insulting to the people who work on these things that you think that it is as simple as one person sitting down and deciding to just "make it work" in their copious free time...

Sure you can cludge a load of files together in the right way using someone elses work as a base to create a ROM image that works. But what happens when one of the new files is not the same version or doesn't support something explicitly needed by by another system file, or you put a wrong file in? You get a crock of sh*t, that's what.

Yes, Football did incredibly well getting AKU3.5 to work, but CF doesn't work and from what I can tell there are other issues. Nice work, but even with his skill he is lacking either some of the necessary files or the ability to make working replacements.

I'm all for people pushing the boundaries and *making* it work, but the following has to be taken into account.

1) It's harder than you think it is.

2) There are very few people on this forum capable of it. xda-developers is different, it's based on hardware minded people coming together to support a device themselves. Aximsite is based on end users with little or no working knowledge of the internals of the device.

3) It is ILLEGAL. WM6 is commercial software and if you haven't paid for it then you have no right to use it. The fact that Dell isn't giving you a choice about paying for it is not an excuse for piracy.

4) Seriously, it is a LOT harder than you think it is to "just hakit plaese!"

So please, show some intelligence and respect for the people behind the scenes. It's childish and immoral to whine and plead for someone to do something that is not only difficult but also illegal just so you can play with the latest and greatest software.

Huh.

Had to do a group project in university with three other guys, two of whom where visa students from Hong Kong. The other Canadian guy and I had to help them re-write their portion... their spelling was bang-on (yay spellchecker), but their grammar was a bit ... weird :) We didn't mind in the slightest though... being able to swing a student visa usually means being really, really bright, so the group got an excellent mark. Great guys to work with, too.

Good post Chris and quite legible. :approve:
I just wish I could understand what you are talking about.
Do you think it's worth while trying to get Dos to run on my x51V?

For someone, who can barely communicate in a recognisable form of English, to call other members "idiots" strikes me as a little unnecessary.

Whilst the rest of us mere mortals may not be as clever as the Original Poster, one presumes that (within the Aximsite Rules) we can discuss whatever we wish. If the OP doesn't like a topic, he can just ignore it.

Hey BAF, did you program the spell checker yourself?

I'm not even going to comment on grammar, punctuation or capitalisation.
