Icon13 Why No WM6?

You know, I find it very frustrating that Microsoft are not releasing Windows Mobile 6 to the general market. Why only release the software with new devices, it's very annoying .

I currently have two PDA's, one Dell and one HP iPAQ and I'm led to believe that neither will be offered the WM6 upgrade - either free or purchased.

I find this situation similar to the Mobile Phone market - I'd love to get a new Sony Ericsson K850i and use one of my current SIM cards. I have one on contract with 3, and two Pay & Go SIM's one O2 and on Orange. But do you think I can buy the new phone? Hell can I. Only with a new contract .

Windows Mobile 6 looks great - and I'd love it, but unless this system of locking out current users is changed then I'll have to suffer with WM5 :rolling:.

It's not Microsoft's fault, it is HP's fault.

there are a few Hacked roms you can look at. One is the WM5 football rom for the x50v., if that is the device that you have. as for anything WM6, if its not released by the company, we, and you, aren't allowed to about whether ir may or may not exist or link to it as these are defined as illegal roms.

and it is HPs and Dells fault.

Yeah - I understand that HP are not releasing an upgrade.

But why don't Microsoft sell WM6 as an upgrade - like they do with XP/Vista? I'm sure that if they did that then folks would buy it, I know that I would.

Hi,

HP and Dell would still need to tweak the WM6 rom to make it work on the hardware.

MS could sell it but if it is not made to fit your pda, it does you no good.

HP and Dell are not going to give company specs on their hardware to MS.

You can buy the new phone without a contract extension, you just can't get it at the discounted price that comes with signing a contract. If for some reason your local provider won't sell it to you, there are plenty of stores that sell unlocked phones that will be more than happy to take your money :)

If you actually read ALL of words in this thread, you would find out that they are talking WM6 IN GENERAL, NOT about the WM6 hacked roms. Discussion of general WM6 IS ALLOWED! I'm sure any admin will agree with me on this. This shows that you can be ignorant sometimes.

As Steven855 said above you, read the thread.
It is a discussion about why WM6 hasn't been released for general use.
It is not about using ROMs that have been deemed illegal by this site.
WM6 can be discussed quite happily on this site as many devices have it.
What isn't allowed is discussion of hacked ROMs for devices that have never been released with WM6.
As a side note, Punctuation very occasionally makes a post easier to understand.

Microsoft do not sell Windows Mobile to manufacturers like they do XP or Vista. Instead, they sell a toolkit for manufacturers to modify the ROM for their device and their device only; so again, a 'vanilla' ROM would not work on your device; it is not like a PC.

I have had this discussion with Kenneth in a previous thread. But Kenneth feels the need to pipe into any discussion of WM6.0 (no matter what the context) to remind people that discussion of WM6.0 is not permitted on this forum. Since Kenneth seems to be very Axim-centric, he does not seem to recognize that there are other pocket pcs that run legitimate versions of WM6.0 and that discussion of these devices or even general discussions of WM6.0 are permitted and encouraged on this forum.

PS: Kenneth, punctuation is your friend

lol, kenneth, we'reboth NY based axim user. I think what enneth is trying to say is that if HP doens't have a WM6 release, aximsite considers it illegal too.

And LimpsEd, please, some of your facts are slightly off. I had CE 4.2 (WM2003) before it was released on a pocket pc What it is is a 6 CD developmental software. That includes quite a bit of drivers and what not. Later, you can add your own software and what not. You know...and what not:)

I echo that - I read and re-read the post above, and honestly not a word of it made sense. That's two people from New York that are hard to understand, is there a trend, lol?? Just kidding, but seriously GenesisFactor, re-post that in English, and how in the world are you a reviewer???
