Going fm AximWM5 to new device WM6

All,
Two questions.
1. I lost my Axim and will sync existing info with a new device I bought (see below). But first I want to back up everything to a separate directory to be ready in case I screw up the restoration. Anything tricky about the necessary file copying for backup? Is there any important file(s) in hidden places like Local Settings or Application Data in Documents and Settings?

2. I finally decided I could have my phone and information in one device so I bought a Verizon Samsung SHC-i760. This is a WM6 device. I remember posts in which the method for replacing your WM5 device (an Axim x51v) with another WM PDA required synching to a guest account first. Then you somehow bring the old info into the new device with a second partnership named the way it always did. Searching didn't turn up the messages that dealt with this in the past.

This "first sync" for the Samsung will happen under WinXP TabletOS, where I use AS4.2 because that is what worked with my Axim... or do I have to install AS4.5 on this first-sync laptop for the Samsung to work?

Within a week, I will have finished preparing a new Vista Business laptop with a new clean install of Window, Office, OneNote, and my existing Office and OneNote files. Should I wait and synch first there? I want to get all that Axim info back into the new Samsung as soon as possible, but if the interim step of AS4.2 setup on WinXP will complicate its smooth use on Vista, I can stand to wait (I hope). I also hope synch really is smooth in Vista but I hear otherwise.

Thanks, in advance, for suggestions!

You will need to install AS 4.5 to sync your WM6.0 device - earlier versions of AS will not work with WM6.0 devices. So after you uninstall AS 4.2 and install AS 4.5, you'll simply set up a new partnership for your new device and sync it.

Before syncing your new device, you should sync your Axim to your computer, so all your contacts, tasks, appointments and documents are on your computer (assuming you sync all these things already). You can sync the Axim either with AS 4.2 or with AS 4.5 - it really should not make a difference.

You'll be setting up two completely different partnerships for the Axim and the new device - there should be no conflict between syncing these two devices to the same computer. Of course each device will need to have unique names.

There is no reason to wait until you have your Vista computer ready to go.

The i760 replaces a lost Axim, so synch is "restoration"

Julie,
Thank you! As I said, I lost the Axim so I am restoring my data back to a PPC by synching with the Samsung. I will uninstall the 4.2 and think up a new partnership name, but there will never be a synch with that Axim again. However, I will be doing this first synch with a Toshiba M400 that I won't be using after a few more days.

That's why I want to create a whole other copy of the mobile data in case something goes wrong. With the Axim gone there's only one "copy". I'll figure out where all the files are.

I bought a Lenovo Vista tablet and will be re-installing my own legit copy of Vista Business on the Lenovo so I can choose which Lenovo software and processes I want to live with. I heard that speeds up the tablet. I hope that's so... for the work involved. So, after that is done I will start synching with the Lenovo through the new process in Vista. Of course I am waiting to install software "for real" until my Vista DVD gets here.
